self storage

Source: The Eagle, Bryan, TexasSept.self storage 22--Other than too many penalties, 10th-ranked Texas A&M showed no hangover effects from last week's Alabama loss, rolling to a 42-13 victory over Southern Methodist on Saturday night at Kyle Field.Johnny Manziel and a solid defensive effort allowed A&M to move forward from the 49-42 loss to the top-ranked Crimson Tide, giving the partisan crowd of 86,542 enough reason to celebrate and move forward, too.The Aggies (3-1) showed some signs of mental wear coming off the biggest game in Kyle Field history with 13 penalties for 114 yards, and they also had a turnover and failed to convert three extra points. But the rest of the time they overwhelmed the Mustangs (1-2), who for a second straight season couldn't contain A&M's elusive quarterback.Manziel completed 14 of 21 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown. He added 102 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries without getting caught behind the line of scrimmage, constantly leaving Mustangs in his wake tackling air."We tried everything against Manziel," SMU head coach June Jones said. "He is an amazing player. You blitz him, and he is accurate with the ball. You rush three, and he can scramble around. He is a great college football player, and he is in the perfect system."It wasn't much different a year ago when Manziel had his first big game at A&M, leading the Aggies to a 48-3 victory over SMU coming off a 20-17 loss to Florida. He had six touchdowns and 418 total yards in only three quarters, starting his run to becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. He took a big step toward a second Heisman last week despite the loss, finishing with 562 total yards and five touchdowns. This time against SMU he needed less than three quarters, playing only the first possession of the second half to give A&M a 39-6 lead.Manziel took A&M 78 yards in eight plays with running back Ben Malena scoring from the SMU 1-yard line. The huge lead allowed Manziel to don a visor and enjoy the rest of the game, especially the defensive effort.A&M bounced back from allowing 568 yards against Alabama with its best effort of the season. The Aggies forced three turnovers, including a 12-yard fumble return for a touchdown by junior Deshazor Everett who moved from cornerback to safety. True freshman Darian Claiborne, making his first start at weakside linebacker, combined with Everett for 12 tackles.A&M allowed 434 yards, but the Mustangs ran 84 plays with only two going for more than 19 yards."We looked pretty fast out there tonight, and at times we looked extremely fast," A&M defensive coordinator Mark Snyder said. The Aggies used a 4-2-5 alignment to combat SMU's five-receiver sets, and their ability to tackle in space slowed down the Mustangs' pass-oriented spread offense, which could convert only 5 of 16 third downs."You have to have a good team effort to not expose missed tackles," A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said.Besides Everett and Claiborne, A&M had five other players with at least five tackles led by senior cornerback Tramain Jacobs' 10. A&M also forced SMU senior quarterback Garrett Gilbert into his first interception of the season in 172 attempts. Midway through the fourth quarter with SMU facing third-and-goal at A&M's 8, A&M junior linebacker Tommy Sanders intercepted a pass. He fumbled the ball, but A&M true freshman end Daeshon Hall picked it up and returned it 39 yards.A&M sacked Gilbert only once but had four hurries and knocked down nine passes as Gilbert finished 37 of 62 passing for 310 yards."We're still a work in progress for sur迷你倉," Snyder said. "But if we keep seeing improvement every week, I think we'll be just fine."A&M wasn't able to keep SMU out of the end zone as Gilbert and Keenan Holman teamed up on a 31-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring. Holman had 10 catches for 133 yards.A&M's top receiving target was junior Malcome Kennedy who had six catches for 83 yards and a score. The Aggies rushed for a season-high 265 yards with senior running back Ben Malena getting 71 yards and two TDs on 13 carries. It was a quick second half after A&M took a 32-6 halftime lead. The first half, which took almost two hours, ended with SMU's Chase Hover kicking a 47-yard field goal on the final play. The Mustangs covered 61 yards on nine plays, making good use of the last 65 seconds.A&M dominated the rest of a sloppy first half as the teams combined for 21 penalties for 161 yards. The Aggies missed a chance to open the game with three touchdowns on three possessions when SMU's Hayden Greenbaum intercepted a pass that deflected off the hands of a diving Mike Evans, ending an eight-play, 31-yard drive after a successful onside kick.SMU got a 42-yard field goal after the turnover, going 66 yards in 11 plays to cut A&M's lead to 14-3.A&M answered with 18 points, finding the end zone easier than the point after. Aggie kickers missed three straight PATs, two by Taylor Bertolet and the third by Josh Lambo when holder Drew Kaser had trouble with the snap to give SMU time to block the kick.Kennedy, coming off a three-touchdown game, had a 16-yard score to make it 20-3 with 10 minutes, 29 seconds left in the half. A&M opened the 11-play, 74-yard drive with five straight rushes for 38 yards.A&M took advantage of a sack by senior linebacker Nate Askew and a 30-yard punt return by De'Vante Harris to make it 26-3. Manziel capped the four-play, 49-yard drive with a 7-yard run.Everett made it 32-3 with his fumble return. He got help from A&M safety Toney Hurd Jr. who knocked the ball from SMU receiver Jeremiah Gaines after a 3-yard gain. The Aggies couldn't stand prosperity, taking points off the board on their next possession.Sumlin opted to go for it after sophomore running back Tra Carson was stopped for no gain on third-and-1 from the SMU 5. But a false start on sophomore center Mike Matthews -- his fourth penalty of the half -- forced A&M to try a 27-yard field goal that Lambo hit. SMU, though, was offsides so A&M went for it again but a botched snap led to a 4-yard loss. SMU answered with its half-ending, field-goal drive.Lambo bounced back to hit a 40-yarder with 6 seconds left in the third quarter for A&M's final points which capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive led by junior quarterback Matt Joeckel who then gave way to true freshman Kenny Hill in the fourth quarter.A&M won the game's toss and surprisingly declined because of a miscommunication, Sumlin said. Gilbert completed six passes on SMU's first possession but the Mustangs had to punt because a 17-yard completion to Holman was wiped out by an illegal formation penalty. The Aggies took advantage of a 24-yard punt, needing only five plays to cover 52 yards, never facing a third down with Malena going the final 3 yards.A&M had to convert only one third down the next time it had the ball, a 46-yard reception by Evans, part of a seven-play, 80-yard drive capped by Manziel's 7-yard run with 5:49 left in the first quarter to make it 14-0.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) Visit The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) at .theeagle.com Distributed by MCT Information Services文件倉

Source: St.self storage Louis Post-DispatchSept. 21--JEFFERSON CITY --Across the country, states are featuring celebrities, quirky songs and football game-day ads to promote the Oct. 1 debut of the online health insurance exchanges.Minnesota's multimillion-dollar campaign, for example, stars Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox in zany situations in which the lumberjack unexpectedly needs medical attention -- and health insurance. It's been much quieter in Missouri.A coalition of health care providers, community groups and faith-based organizations will try to get the word out this fall to the more than 800,000 uninsured Missourians.Their message: "Using the Missouri Health Insurance Marketplace is Easy!" declares a glossy handout prepared for the Cover Missouri coalition. The decidedly low-profile campaign here stems from state voters' overwhelming passage last year of a law barring the governor from setting up an insurance exchange without legislative or voter approval. As a result of that vote, Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon has adopted a hands-off stance on the divisive issue and the federal government will operate Missouri's online marketplace.Despite the lack of catchy slogans, people are starting to pay attention, said Stephene Moore, regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services office in Kansas City. She and her staff have been talking to groups about the federal Affordable Care Act since Congress passed the landmark law three years ago."A lot of the time I joke with people, 'How many of you waited to do your taxes or your Christmas shopping?' People tend to wait" until the last minute, she said.Officials are stressing that the enrollment period runs through March and that there's plenty of time to figure out the various health plans, which have yet to be unveiled in Missouri or Illinois."It's not a sprint on Oct. 1," said Mike Claffey, who works in the Illinois governor's office and is the state's spokesman on the health care issue. "It's a longer race to the finish line."Beginning next year, most people will owe a penalty if they don't have insurance through a job-sponsored plan, another private plan or a public plan such as Medicaid or Medicare. That's the crux of the individual mandate, the keystone of the Affordable Care Act. The mandate aims to create a broad pool of insured people -- especially healthy people ages 18 to 34 who need less care. That group is dubbed the "young invincibles" because they tend to think they won't get sick. In Missouri and Illinois, an estimated 25 percent of young adults are uninsured."Obviously, with this new system, you want a lot of people in the system, to help subsidize the cost impact with everybody carrying insurance," said David Smith, a lobbyist for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Missouri, which plans to sell insurance in the Missouri exchange."At the end of the day, you've got the healthy population that's going to subsidize the unhealthy population," Smith said.Once the exchange opens, Missourians who are uninsured or lack affordable coverage at work can go to the website, healthcare.gov, to compare health plans and buy one, often with a federal subsidy. The process is slightly different in Illinois, which is partnering with the federal government to set up an exchange. Illinois will have its own "landing page," where people can start the application process. That website has not yet been announced but can be found on Oct. 1 by going to the main state page, .illinois.gov.The landing page will ask Illinois consumers to type in basic data such as income and family size. Based on that information, they will be directed either to a site to apply for Medicaid, the public program for the poor, or to the federally run marketplace to buy private insurance.Illinois expanded Medicaid to cover an additional 200,000 people next year, as the federal law envisioned.Missouri's Republican-controlled Legislature rejected the Medicaid expansion, leaving an estimated 226,525 people below the poverty line in a coverage gap, without subsidized insurance. Legislators may re-examine the eligibility issue next year as part of a bill revamping the program to make it more cost-efficient.In the meantime, health care advocates are encouraging uninsured consumers to set up accounts on the healthcare.gov website and learn the basics about shopping for insurance. There are application checklists, insurance cost calculators, live chats and links galore on the site.but what will it cost? What's still missing is the most important detail: price.Neither the Illinois nor the Missouri exchange has released how much the plans will cost. Officials will say only that the premiums and other details will be posted on or by Oct. 1.How much one-on-one assistance will be available to help consumers sort out the options depends on the type of exchange a state is using. The bottom line: Missouri is getting much less federal money for such efforts than Illinois. The Affordable Care Act earmarked a large pool of money for states that set up their own exchanges or partnered with the federal government on outreach.Sixteen states and the District of Columbia are building their own exchanges. Seven states -- including Illinois -- are partnering with the federal government.Illinois received $115 million for outreach and marketing. About $33 million of the money went to St. Louis-based FleishmanHillard to design an advertising campaign, whic迷你倉 has not been unveiled.More than $36 million went to community groups in Illinois that will help people enroll.By contrast, Missouri -- one of 27 states that ceded control of its exchange to the federal government -- received $4.74 million for outreach. Most of that money went to community health centers to hire 59 insurance counselors. To bolster those efforts, the Missouri Foundation for Health, a St. Louis-based nonprofit agency, provided $5 million in grants to community organizations that will hire counselors. Once the exchange is running, you can find the locations of the counselors listed at .covermissouri.org.Even so, the foundation says counselors will be hard-pressed to handle the workload."We're going to need volunteers in Missouri," said Ryan Barker, the foundation's vice president for health policy. The foundation is spending $1.8 million on marketing, and $1.7 million of that went to FleishmanHillard to shape a public relations campaign. It will rev up after the enrollment period begins. In addition to the FleishmanHillard campaign, Missourians also will see some targeted radio and digital ads for the exchange this fall under a contract that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services signed with the public relations firm Weber Shandwick."It certainly is hard when there are still outstanding questions" about what the plans will cost, said Cynthia McCafferty of FleishmanHillard. "Right now, we can't answer questions about, what are the costs of the plans. Certainly there are challenges but there are always challenges, so you just work with it."The biggest challenge: Polls have found that most people remain wary of the 2010 health care law. A June Gallup poll found 52 percent of respondents surveyed nationally disapproved of it. On Friday, the U.S. House voted to defund the law.SUBSIDIES, PENALTIESAgainst that backdrop, supporters say their best weapon is broader public understanding of the complex law.The plans on the exchange will offer at least 10 essential benefits, including doctor visits, prescription drugs and hospitalization. They will be grouped in four tiers -- bronze, silver, gold and platinum -- that vary based on cost. For example, with a bronze plan, a consumer will pay a lower monthly premium but a higher share of the costs when care is received.Bronze plans will pay about 60 percent of the costs after premiums. At the other end of the scale, platinum will pay 90 percent of costs."Consumers are going to have a pretty wide array of choices to buy the coverage that fits their budget," said Nanette Foster Reilly, a senior official in the regional office of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Kansas City. Most people who use the exchange are likely to be eligible for tax credits that will cover a considerable share of the cost for monthly premiums. The credits will go to people who make between 100 percent and 400 percent of the federal poverty level -- for example, between $23,550 and $94,200 for a family of four.To see if they're eligible for subsidies, consumers will plug in an estimate of their 2014 income, which will be cross-checked through a federal data hub linked to the IRS, Homeland Security and other agencies. The verification will occur "in near-real time," said Foster Reilly. If there are discrepancies that can't be resolved, the consumer will get a list of items to check, she said.Applicants also will automatically be screened for eligibility for Medicaid. If their income is below the state's threshold, the exchange is supposed to electronically send the applicant's information to the Medicaid portal.Though Missouri didn't expand Medicaid, many children are already eligible but not enrolled. When their parents use the exchange, the state has estimated that an additional 24,617 children will wind up on the Medicaid rolls. The enrollment period for the exchange runs through March 31. Coverage will begin as soon as Jan. 1 for those who enroll by Dec. 15."There's been a lot of emphasis on Oct. 1 as the launch date," said Claffey, the spokesman for the Illinois exchange. "We are emphasizing that it's really a 2 1/2 -month enrollment period if you're looking for coverage on Jan. 1."The penalty for not having coverage starts out fairly low -- $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, or 1 percent of family income, whichever is greater -- with the fees growing in subsequent years. Some people will be exempted from the penalty. For example, there's no fine if your family income is below the threshold for filing a tax return -- $10,000 per person or $20,000 for a couple -- or if you would have been eligible for the expanded Medicaid program but you live in a state such as Missouri that did not adopt the expansion. One section of the exchange will be geared to small businesses. The goal of the Small Business Health Options program, or SHOP exchange, is to give smaller employers the same kind of volume discounts that large employers enjoy, reducing the impact on rates that one worker with high medical costs can cause. While officials say the exchange will be ready on time, the software was still being tested this month, so no one is certain how smoothly it will run until it launches."I'm waiting to see them flip the switch," said Smith, the insurance lobbyist.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Visit the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at .stltoday.com Distributed by MCT Information Services文件倉

Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteSept.self storage 21--Labrador retrievers and other big dogs joyfully plunged into the pool in Crafton Park and took long, sure strokes to swim endless laps in the deep end at the first Doggie Paddle last Sunday.A miniature poodle named Lucy daintily waded into the shallow end, wagged her tail and walked around, greeting and meeting other dogs and their people. After a rather brief dip, she got out, dried off and donned a peachy-orange sweater with brown trim. For the next two hours Lucy sedately trotted around on the paved pool deck and the grassy beach area. The 9-pound dog was not the least bit intimidated by the 105 other dogs whose owners paid $10 for their dogs to swim, run and raise money for renovations to the 60-year-old pool.Although she's not much of a swimmer, Lucy has come a long way from a horrific beginning. In February 2010, she was one of 30 dogs rescued from a small unheated trailer in Greene County. Some dogs had wounds from fighting each other, and others had died. The dogs were rescued by the Humane Society of Greene County, and Animal Friends took 12 of them to their Ohio Township shelter. On Feb. 20, 2010, Pam Palchowski of Crafton and her daughter, Angela, then 15, went to Animal Friends looking for a little dog that would enjoy cuddling with them. A shy little poodle that volunteers had named Taquitos was brought out to meet them. Because her long apricot hair had been a solid matted mess when she was taken out of the trailer, the dog was basically bald, A complete shave-down was the only thing a groomer could do to make her look and feel better. Shelter workers thought she was 9 or 10 years old.Taquitos snuggled into Angela's lap, who gave her a new name, Lucy. The adoption was approved after a successful meeting with her father, Steve, and the family's Chow-Chow/shepherd mix, Biscuit.Rescuers warned that the "trailer dogs" might have psychological problems that could never be overcome, but Lucy settled in quickly. With love and patient socialization, she overcame years of poor care and neglect. Some dogs don't enjoy gatherings of large numbers of dogs and people -- even ones that have been loved and well cared for all of their lives. But Lucy clearly enjoyed it all and romped like a dog much younger."Why is she wearing Cleveland Browns colors?" a friend asked."It complements her apricot color and brings out her eyes," Mrs. Palchowski joked. For the record, Lucy has a Steelers jersey and many sweaters and outfits; she needs them to stay warm.迷你倉og lovers who have never seen large numbers of dogs swimming in public pools should mark their calendars for the next ones, including Labor Day swims at Dormont Pool and Mineral Beach in Finleyville. A number of people always show up without dogs because it's so much fun to watch. The Crafton Paddle will be held next year, perhaps on the weekend after Labor Day, said Jamie Beechey, director of borough services.A black Labrador retriever took a break from swimming and trotted over to the concession stand where volunteer Joanne Beechey was selling hot dogs and soft drinks for people and Milk Bones for dogs. The Lab put his paws on the counter like he belonged there, made eye contact with Mrs. Beechey and wagged his tail. When he didn't score a free treat, he politely returned to the pool.Dozens of pink, yellow and purple balls floated in the water, and dogs cheerfully shared them. Labs and goldens and other retrievers looked totally blissed out as they swam with balls in their mouths, returning them so they could retrieve them again.Miss Sarah, 6, enthusiastically retrieved balls for Ed Hanke of Robinson. A Boykin spaniel -- the breed resembles a cocker spaniel -- she's also a therapy dog and visits VA hospitals.Gladys Carlen walked from her house next door to the pool with Harley, 2, a red miniature dachshund. Although Harley's still in therapy dog training, she already visits hospice patients. After a brief wade in the baby pool, Ms. Carlen put a form-fitting T-shirt on the smooth-haired dog to keep her warm while they socialized.Walk for the animalsThe fourth annual Tails on the Trails Dog Walk is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday at the Harrison Hills Park, Laurel and Broken Branch groves. The event benefits Animal Protectors. The $30 registration fee covers a person and dog in a 1.2-mile walk or a 2-mile walk. Walkers are encouraged to collect pledges from friends and family. Money will also be raised by local vendors, food from Holy Smoke, pet portraits, microchipping and nail clipping. Source: St.迷你倉 Louis Post-DispatchSept. 21--After one of the many hospital visits Cardinals closer Jason Motte made this summer to see a young friend battling cancer, his wife noticed how little he talked as he strapped their baby daughter into her car seat, how he hesitated when starting the car, how he moved with a different gravity, like he was carrying something new.A purpose can be heavy."When something is weighing on Jason, something inside, he doesn't say too much," said Caitlin Motte, recalling that moment. "He gets real quiet. His body language gives it away. It wasn't a great visit. You could see it weighing on him."It was like something changed in Jason."Motte and his family had spent time that day with Brandt Ballenger, an 8-year-old patient and fast friend who called Jason "Hobo." Brandt had little energy that day and fewer smiles as the cancer or the treatment to attack the cancer had exhausted him. His father, Jeff, said there were times like this, "when things had gone in a direction we didn't want them to go."The phrase itself is part of the coping, referring to cancer treatment like it's a map. As if wrong turns happen and only a little nudge from the GPS is needed to steer back on course and away from the destination no one discusses. Motte sat in the car about to leave the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center parking lot and decided on the direction he had to go.His wife remembers how Jason didn't say much until he said something."I've got to do more."After several months of planning and prodding -- "He heard a lot of 'nos' before he got a 'yes,'" Caitlin said -- the launch of Motte's more arrives Monday with "Strikeout Childhood Cancer" at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are selling discounted $10 pavilion tickets, $3 of which will go to the Jason Motte Foundation and then directly to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital to support pediatric cancer research.A total of 5,000 tickets have been held aside at the price; more will be offered if they sell out, an official said. At least 1,000 additional tickets will be given away to children currently in the hospital or recently discharged and their families. For the patients who cannot leave their hospitals, Motte plans to lead several teammates Monday morning on visits to, in his words, "take the game to them."Cardinals community relations director Mark Taylor called the pediatric cancer awareness day at the ballpark "our beta for what this day really could be."This is how a pitcher who cannot pitch spent his summer.Motte, who led the National League with 42 saves in 2012, will not throw an inning for the club this season. A ligament in his right elbow split during spring training, reconstructive surgery followed, and his year was over before it began. Only recently did rehab begin to include lightly tossing an actual baseball. That zeal he had to attack the ninth inning and fire fastballs at 100 mph has been rechanneled.Through chance meetings and social media, he befriended two young boys, Lane Goodwin and Brandt, and became part of their fights against cancer and campaigns for more awareness. The days he would have spent at some faraway ballpark with the Cardinals were instead spent with Brandt, playing Angry Birds, and throwing himself into phone calls and meetings and conversations to "help these families fighting for their children up in the hospital rooms know they're not alone," he said.At spring training, Motte chatted with several reporters about his frayed elbow and his lost season. He mentioned how his faith assured him the injury happened for a reason. He had no idea how right he was."The injury closed one door, but it opened so many others," Motte said. "This has had such a lasting effect on me. I had to make the most of this time. It makes it even more obvious I'm supposed to be doing something else. If you were to say to me, 'Hey, you don't need surgery, you could have 40 saves, do all this stuff and not meet Brandt, not know his family, not learn what I have' -- I would have the surgery all over again."STRIKING OUT CANCERBefore Motte met Brandt, something started with an iPod.Back in 2010, the year before Motte closed out the Cardinals' World Series championship, Jason and Caitlin loaded up an iPod with Mozart and Pachebel's Canon and other classical music for her grandfather, Lynn Doyle. "D," as everyone called him, had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. The iPod was meant to be a companion during treatment -- that is, when Jason wasn't.With Doyle one day at the West Clinic in Memphis, Tenn., Motte saw a request for blankets. Blankets? He could donate blankets. But it wasn't that simple. The hospital couldn't accept actual blankets but sought charitable donations to purchase blankets. Motte asked around about organizing a drive. Caitlin recalled Doyle's advice: "Don't halfway throw a fundraiser."Within a year, the Mottes hosted a "Strike Out Cancer" auction. It took some time to organize -- Motte collected items during the 2012 season -- but in November 2012 they raised $37,000, all of it for the Wings Cancer Foundation."We got it started, and it led to other things," Motte said. One connection, one event led to several more. During the 2011 World Series, Motte flipped a ball from the bullpen to a boy he didn't know. Motte later found out the Cardinals fan from Kentucky was Lane, and he was battling an aggressive cancer. Motte signed the ball "Thumbs Up," a nod to the "Thumbs Up for Lane Goodwin" campaign on social media. The baseball-themed T-shirt company 108 Stitches had a red shirt printed with a backward "K," the universal symbol for a called strikeout. Motte asked about putting the word "cancer" underneath, and the shirt has spread through clubhouses. On Thursday, at least four Cardinals, including Matt Holliday and Chris Carpenter, wore their "K Cancer" shirts during pregame warm-ups. A portion of the sales from the T-shirt benefit the Jason Motte Foundation, itself an outgrowth of these connections Motte has made. There was no going halfway.DEALING WITH LOSSESBut along the way, there were losses. Doyle died Dec. 26, 2011, 11 months before the fundraiser he inspired happened. While Motte pitched two scoreless innings for a save in Game 3 of the 2012 National League championship series, his friend Lane died. Lane was 13. Through him, Motte had become more involved in the social media movement for cancer awareness, and it was on Twitter that he received a request. The 儲存倉ardinals closer was asked to make a "Team Brandt" poster to show support for a young Swansea boy who had been diagnosed with Wilms' tumor, Stage 4. Brandt was too small and the tumor too big for it to be removed when first diagnosed.Motte made the sign, but he also made it a point to keep tabs on Brandt. In early 2013, while Motte was in spring training, he saw on the Team Brandt Facebook page that Brandt's "Make-A-Wish" trip to Orlando, Fla., had been pushed up. No one needed to explain why. Motte reached out to the family and arranged to meet Brandt at a hotel in Orlando, on an off day for Cardinals' workouts. The families clicked.Brandt filched Caitlin's phone and started taking selfies, which Motte still has on his phone. Brandt tugged on Motte's beard. Motte learned all about Brandt's duel with cancer. Halfway through his first rounds of treatment, Brandt's family learned the tumor had an increased resistance to chemotherapy. Instead of "being six months from being done, we started over and had 18 months to go," Jeff Ballenger said. During spring, new nodules had formed in his lungs."The cancer," Jeff said, recalling that day, "was back."Motte heard all about the day they first learned Brandt had cancer -- Oct. 29, 2011. Motte knew it well. It was the day after the Cardinals won the World Series."After the World Series, you're thinking, 'I am the man. I am on top of the world. I friggin' won the World Series, and this is the greatest thing ever,'" Motte said. "A day later, up the street five minutes, there is someone finding out that their child has cancer. This is happening on a daily basis. On a daily basis families are finding out the worst news they ever could get about their 8-year-old son."That's when it hits you."ONE LIFE IMPACTING ANOTHERWhen Motte met with Brandt, there was usually an iPad.Brandt went through several of them during his treatment, filling one tablet up and needing one with more memory until he had the largest available. He loved dinosaurs and had "Jurassic Park" movies loaded on his iPad. Swiping his way through page after page of Brandt's apps, Motte laughed one day when he pointed out that 250 needed updating. The iPad was more than a pastime, it was a hint to Brandt's comfort: If it sat ignored, his parents knew he was having a rough day.Motte visited Brandt in the hospital or at home or after rehab sessions. He brought Brandt on the truck ride around Busch Stadium on opening day, and Brandt counted the signs for him and noticed none for Motte. They don't make posters for injured pitchers, Motte told him.Brandt, quick to remind people "don't forget the 'D'" in his name, was shy when meeting new people, but precocious around ones he knew. He called Motte "Hobo" because of how scruffy and disheveled the pitcher's drivers license looked."Brandt had this huge impact on my life," Motte said. "It wasn't just, 'Hey, go see the kid in the hospital.' It's not, hand over a teddy bear, OK, sweet man, shake hands, smile, and then go to the park and, 'OK, let's get some outs!' This was a friendship that followed me. It's something that just stuck with me. I think of him now on a daily basis."At one point during his treatment, Brandt entered clinical trials but, as his father said, there weren't many to choose from for children. Dr. William Ferguson, medical director at the Bob Costas Cancer Center, explained in an email that children have "many fewer cases of cancer, fewer clinical trials, less funding, but (a) higher rate of access and participation" than adults. The less funding for research struck Motte.Major League Baseball has breast cancer awareness on Mother's Day with pink ribbons and pink bats at the ballpark. On Father's Day, teams wear light blue ribbons and use blue bats for prostate cancer awareness. Motte approached baseball about a day for gold ribbons, the symbol of childhood cancer awareness. The process was slow. He understood "every day would have a ribbon" if baseball responded to every player's cause. The Cardinals responded to his. Starting around the All-Star break, Motte pushed for Monday's event.Nothing halfway.SAYING GOODBYEWhile he organized awareness day at Busch, Motte also planned a June birthday party for Brandt. Listening to the two talk about it, Brandt's parents weren't sure he would make it as his health worsened, "but we never told Jason," Jeff said. The 9th birthday party happened, at Dave & Buster's. Brandt rallied. The iPad was back in his grasp. But within a month he would play it less and less. On July 23, Motte was parking at Busch Stadium, on time for another rehab workout, when he received a text messages from the Ballengers. It said if he wanted to remember Brandt the way he was a few days before, they understood. If he wanted to say his goodbyes, he should come to the hospital.Motte walked away from his rehab and drove straight to Brandt. His friend died 30 minutes after their last visit.Back in their car, driving home from Brandt's funeral, Motte and his wife talked about how they filled their time without baseball this summer, how his elbow giving out allowed him to give of his heart. He told a coach recently that he's eager to see what happens when he's ready to pitch because he has a deeper sense "of the kid out there who hangs on every strike and how this is who you play for."This weekend he'll volunteer at a fundraiser for Lane's foundation and on Sunday night sign autographs at Fizzy's Soda Fountain in Webster Groves to benefit Friends of Kids with Cancer. Only in the past couple weeks did he contract the Goodwins and Ballengers and invite them to Monday's game -- the first of what he hopes are many to honor their sons.It has turned into a memorial. It will remain a mission."If he had never gotten hurt, he would have never met this little boy, never been touched by these boys' lives," Caitlin said. "He believed there was a reason it happened. God had a plan for him and started filling in the gaps. ... The word I keep coming back to is perspective. He's wanted to play baseball since he was 3 years old. Baseball has always been his path. But when it's time to put the ball down, there is another path out there for him. He didn't know it existed. He didn't know that he had it in him."This was put on his heart," his wife concludes. "This is the path."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Visit the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at .stltoday.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

Source: The Porterville Recorder, Calif. Sept. 20--Lt. Tom Sigley and his team of marijuana busters are going six days a week this summer to keep up with the huge number of illegal grow sites in the county. It is marijuana growing season and the hard work is really just beginning. So far this summer, deputies with the sheriff's department's Special Tactics Enforcement Patrol have pulled up 220,742 plants -- as of last week. That is already nearly as many as they dug up all of last summer and the busy time of the year is just beginning.Last Thursday, the team pulled up more than 100 plants at a residence on West North Grand Avenue near Porterville."Some of those were 12-feet tall," noted Sigley, who has been heading up the special detail for more than three years. While many of the plants destroyed so far have been much smaller than 12-feet, he said they will now regularly find plants that size and larger. That is because the end of the growing season is near and plants are nearing peak sizes, which can mean 20-feet tall with trunks like trees, not weeds.Fifth District Supervisor Mike Ennis likes to use the word "hammer" when he talks about the county's effort against the marijuana growers."They [growers] know we're here for sure," said Ennis. It was two years ago that a definite shift took place from growing marijuana in the foothills and mountains to growing it on the Valley floor. Last year, deputies took down several large grow sites, many around Porterville and Terra Bella and some with more than 2,000 plants. This year, the grow sites appear to be a little smaller, but the gardens are plentiful."It hasn't shifted, just gotten worse. In past they tried to hide behind the medical [cards]. This year they're doing both."He expects this year's haul to surpass last year's.Ennis said he has gotten numerous calls from residents, many in the Terra Bella area, of suspected grow sites. He estimates he has followed up on more than 30 gardens this year. He did say the number of calls are not as many as last summer.Sequoia National Forest Supervisor Kevin Elliott said more than 70,000 plants have been taken out of the national forest above Porterville this year, more than last year. He said it does not appear the drought has had a big impact, but Sigley said they are running across a few abandoned grow sites in the mountains where they ran out of water and let the plants die.It was at a large grow site above Springville that a well-known volunteer was killed Thursday during a reclamation project to clean up that site. Seth Krogen with the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew died when he fell from a helicopter above the site that officials said was littered with chemicals and other garbage.Sigley said his eight-man crew is sometimes going six days and the challenge to keep up is daunting. So far, they have hit 116 grow sites, 100 of those on private land and the remaining in the forest, so far this year. Of the plants seized, it is about a 50-50 split."We've been busting four or five a week," he said, adding it will take longer now to clear a grow site because the plants are getting bigger.Sigley said most of the gardens on the Valley floor have been 700 t迷你倉 900 plants in size, but they took 4,900 plants out of one of the mountain grow sites."I think they're spreading those out," he said of the tactics seem to be taken by growers this year.Growers are bound by both the laws stated in the Compassionate Care Act and county zoning laws. The act limits the number of plants a person can grow based on what are called "recommends," which are letters from doctors giving the person the permission to grow, normally, no more than 99 plants. However, the county has placed strict zoning ordinances on grow sites, requiring them to be indoors, secured, and only in industrial zones, not in ag areas."You can't grow it except in industrial zoned areas," stressed Ennis.Sigley said if they visit a grow site and it is under the 99 plant limit, but not in a properly zoned area, the case is turned over to the county code enforcement department and abatement procedures are begun. If the owner does not remove the plants, the sheriff's department gets involved again.Growers of marijuana face not only prison time, they can also be fined for every day they are out of zoning compliance and that can become very costly. Although seldom used, authorities can also seize property if the owner does not comply, which Ennis said might occur on a recent bust in the Terra Bella area where those growers might face federal charges as well. The supervisor said those who are growing pot in violation of county zoning laws are given 10 days to take down the garden. If they don't comply, they can face a fine of $100 a day for every plant."There is some property where they owe us as much as $800,000," he said.Sigley said deputies have only walked away from a handful of gardens that did meet part of the law, but all have at least violated the zoning laws."I don't think we've found one yet that meets all the laws," he said. There is no one area more prone to the growing. "It's spread out everywhere. We have to prioritize and hit them when we can."He said he knows some residents who call in a site get frustrated when they don't see something happen immediately, but with the backlog, they get to them as fast as they came. Still, he knows they will not get to them all by the time the growing season ends, although some operations are year-round."We've busted some green houses," he said.He said citizens have been good in contacting them with tips, and with plants now taller than most fences, those tips are coming in faster and faster."We do a lot of compliance checks," he said of the tips, then take the appropriate action. While the number of homicides related to the growing of marijuana is down, there still have been two deaths connected to grow sites. Two years ago there were more than eight deaths.Still, they are seizing weapons at many of the grow sites -- 234 weapons to date -- and have made 92 arrests.Rick Elkins is interim publisher of the Porterville Recorder. Source: The Patriot-News, Harrisburg, Pa.儲存Sept. 20--For the better part of the past two years Americans have repeatedly been told that the federal government was weeks, days, and sometimes even hours away from a total fiscal collapse. The government's financial stability has been threatened by debt ceilings, fiscal cliffs, and sequesters. One or all of them seems to pop up in regimented fashion every few months. And like clockwork, Washington officials are warning again that the latest federal financial fiasco could shut the government down at the end of this month.U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr., one of those sounding the alarm over a possible government shutdown, was uncharacteristically emphatic Thursday when discussing the latest spending stalemate."A lot of taxpayers must be saying to themselves 'Didn't those people in Washington get the message from 2011'," Casey said in a conference call with reporters. "The impact of [the 2011 debt ceiling debate] was devastating. You would think that some people would have learned, but here we are again."His colleague, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey seemed to agrees -- to a point."Like most Pennsylvanians, I am sick and tired of government by manufactured crisis," Toomey said in a statement. "This is no way to manage the federal government. Rather than enacting a budget, passing individual spending bills, and identifying and eliminating wasteful programs, Senate Democrats dodge the tough issues and pass these thousand-page, trillion-dollar, midnight monstrosities."The issue centers around a procedural vote in Congress that enables the government to continue spending money at current levels, and meet financial obligations already made. However confusion and dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act has produced a growing desire among many to exclude the controversial health care law from the funding resolution.Several grassroots organizations -- including some in Pennsylvania -- have appealed to legislators to not approve any funding legislation that enables Obamacare. Many in Congress -- mostly Republicans -- have moved to defund the health care law. Among them are Toomey, R-Lehigh, and U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Hazleton.Both lawmakers have co-sponsored bills that would halt funding for the health care law.Earlier this month a libertarian group singled out Toomey over the issue. Tuesday he made his position crystal clear."In the absence of repealing this law, Congress should at least delay the implementation of its heavy-handed mandates to prevent the imminent harm they will have on the pocketbooks of Pennsylvanians, job creation, and our economy," Toomey said. But rather than seek some common ground, it seems Congress has positioned itself to reach yet another budgetary impasse. The GOP-controlled House is set to approve a funding plan Friday that excludes Obamacare. However the specific defund provision is expected to be sheared out by the Senate and then sent back to the House.Though many pundits believe the House will pass the edited measure, the budgetary dance is set to continue two weeks later when Congress takes up the debt ceiling debate again. And though Americans are split on the merits of a government shutdown, polls suggest most voters feel a lengthy shutdown would be calamitous for the country.Still, having been warned repeatedly of impending financial doom over the past two years, there's plenty of evidence that voters are burnt out over the whole debacle."I think there's a good bit of ambivalence," said Franklin and Marshall College pollster Terry Madonna. "As a hypothetic [the threat of a government shutdown] doesn't resonate. It takes something concrete, something that affects their lives."Madonna pointed to the Pennsylvania voter ambivalence displayed toward successive late budgets passed under former Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell."The voters had no problem re-electing Rendell by 21 percentage points," he said. But even though Obama's approval rating is suffering, Madonna said polls show an increasing inclination to blame the GOP should a federal shutdown take place."Shutting down the government to defund the Affordable Care Act I think would be disaster for the Republicans," he added. However those same polls suggest voters increasingly want Obamacare scaled back. And it's worth noting that the argument to delay funding for the health care law has both pros and cons. The administration has acknowledged flaws in the law, and it will require time to fix them. The calls to put Obamacare funding on hold, as Barletta's bill asks, would provide that time. However in the interim, millions of Americans would go uninsured and businesses would be left in a policy limbo that prevents them from solidifying future plans."They want to repeal this legislation, go back to the time with children with pre-existing conditions don't have coverage, ... and say to those millions of families 'Tough luck'," Casey said of Obamacare critics, adding that linking the debt ceiling debate to concerns over the Affordable Care Act is inappropriate."I voted for changes to the legislation and I'll vote for more, but I'm not going to vote for legislation that repeals the bill and walks away from the problem," he added.Casey's annoyance over the political use of Obamacare was matched by Thursday his contempt for the debt ceiling debate."We all know this is a manufactured crisis," he said. "It's a political stunt by some members of Congress to use the debt ceiling in a way that's very political and in a way that I think is very damaging for the country."The Scranton Democrat pointed to a new report from Congress' Joint Economic Committee that found the 2011 debt ceiling debate led to a drop in the stock market, the first national credit rating loss in American history, a 50 percent drop in job growth, and a negative effect on consumer confidence.Casey said economist have estimated that the mere 2011 debate cost the country $112 billion. And he pulled no punches in assigning blame to Republicans."This is what happens when a small group of ideologically extreme people take total control of a political party," he said defiantly.A new report from the left-leaning Center for American Progress Action Fund agreed."Opponents of the Affordable Care Act have waged a systematic campaign to undermine and sabotage the law," said Tom Perriello, the fund's president. "These efforts may be seem like political games to some in Washington, but they have real consequences for real people."But supporters must come to grips with the inescapable fact that the Affordable Care Act and debt ceiling debates aren't going away -- Toomey and Barletta's recent bills are evidence of that.Toomey, however, sees it differently."I have written and introduced comprehensive budgets and offered ideas to break partisan logjams," he said. "But without cooperation from the other side of the aisle, it has been hard to make progress."So it seems it's left to Democrats such as Obama and Casey to put their partisan frustrations aside, be the politicians they were elected to be, and find a way to keep the lights on in Washington.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.)
