Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.self storageAug. 23--Several years ago, the airlines started the practice of collecting extra fees over and above the basic ticket price. Now, many hotels in the U.S. are catching on to the idea.Collecting these extra surcharges is big business for the airlines -- the industry's revenue from the charges totaled some $6 billion last year, the New York Times reports. The results are becoming similar for the hotels. Last year, these fees amounted to $2.1 billion a year for the industry, doubling the amount hotels collected 10 years ago. While airlines are nicking passengers with extra fees for boarding an aircraft early, changing itineraries and checking luggage, many hotels -- mostly high-end properties -- are becoming just as inventive, charging guests for such services as using a business center or Internet connection or adding so-called "resort fees," which usually are nothing more than using the fitness room, spa or swimming pool.According to the New York Times, fees also are being added at some hotels for early checkouts, receiving faxes and overnight packages, automatic gratuities, availability of room safes and mandatory valet parking. While many of the large convention, resort and luxury properties are adding fees, a good many hotels aren't, the article points out. Many of the mid-level hotel brands favored by business travelers aren't in the fee-charging game. Mid-level hotels with strong bases in business travel provide a range of services without an extra charge -- from free Internet and business-center access to free breakfasts and, in some cases, even a free evening cocktail hour with snacks. So the news isn't all bad to the consumer. But beware when you check in because many of these fees are "hidden," or virtually automatic surcharges that show up on your final bill at check-out.HERE AND THERE:-- NBC Universal has announced plans to construct at $1.6 billion, 25-year expansion of its Los Angeles-area theme park. T迷你倉e company will build The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at its Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, along with upgraded TV production studios and office space on the studio lot, according to the Associated Press. The project eventually will include a hotel and retail outlets, adding nearly 2 million square feet to the studio complex. The plan initially called for nearly 3,000 residences, but that was dropped after local residents and politicians objected.-- Allegiant Airlines, which serves the Rochester-Phoenix market, has filed plans with the Transportation Department to expand its scheduled route network into Mexico next year, with service linking Las Vegas, Hermosillo and Los Cabos. The service would start next June 1. Up to now, the carrier has served only the U.S. domestic market.-- The American cruise industry continued to be a substantial contributor to the U.S. economy in 2012, according to an independent study commissioned by Cruise Line International Association, the marketing arm for the industry. The 26 North American member lines, passengers and crew contributed more than $42 billion in total U.S. economic impact, a 4.6 percent increase over 2011. In addition, the cruise industry generated 356,311 jobs, paying a record $17.4 billion in wages to American workers.-- London's Heathrow Airport is planning to create a third runway, saying the idea will allow a vast expansion at Europe's busiest air hub. The expansion, if approved, would allow the airport to move from a capacity of 480,000 flights a year to 740,000, a move that supporters insist is critical in order for the country to remain competitive on the world stage. Cost of the options, according to the Associated Press, range from $21 billion to some $28 billion. The plan would mean hundreds or in some cases thousands of compulsory property purchases.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Post-Bulletin Visit the Post-Bulletin at .postbulletin.com Distributed by MCT Information Services文件倉

Source: The Telegraph, Alton, Ill.self storageAug. 26--EDWARDSVILLE -- Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons filed misdemeanor charges Monday against the former owner of a monkey that bit a 6-year-old boy in Godfrey nearly three months ago.Nina, the female Java macaque, was at the Bark in the Park event in Godfrey on June 2 with her owner, Kendra D. Hougland of Alton, when she bit the child.Following the incident, Madison County Animal Control took possession of the monkey. Animal Control officials allowed a local woman to keep the monkey at her residence, because local facilities were not set up to house a primate during a required quarantine period. The temporary guardian subsequently transported Nina to Indiana without the knowledge of local officials, forcing Gibbons to file a declaration of the right of possession in Madison County Circuit Court in order to regain possession of the primate and turn it over to the St. Louis Zoo. On June 28, Circuit Judge Barb Crowder granted the state's request. Officials with the St. Louis Zoo took possession of Nina on July 3 and sent her to a primate rescue center in Kentucky, where she will remain.During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Hougland, who had been in possession of Nina since Aug. 30, 2012, did not lawfully own her and was in violation of the state's Dangerous Animal A迷你倉t, which makes it a criminal offense to possess a primate.Hougland was charged Monday in Madison County Circuit Court with three counts of unlawful possession of a primate, a Class C misdemeanor, and was given a notice to appear. Penalties range from fines and probation up to 30 days in the Madison County Jail.Gibbons said he plans to seek restitution for medical costs for the victim's family, as well as the costs incurred in caring for Nina.Gibbons expressed his concern for the young victim in the case. He also offered thanks to everyone involved in bringing the investigation and placement of Nina to a satisfactory conclusion."This was a difficult situation," he said. "I want to thank the St. Louis Zoo for their work, not only as an organization that is dedicated to the well-being of wild animals, but also for being such a great community partner."He also noted that this case is a good example as to why the state includes primates in the Dangerous Animals Act."Nina is now in a place that is much better equipped to take care of her, and her needs as a wild animal," Gibbons said. "I hope this case serves as a lesson to anyone who considers having a wild animal as a pet in their home."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Telegraph (Alton, Ill.) Resonance Audio has been through the recording sector doldrums, but has bounced back by thinking ahead, reports NICHOLAS YONGTHE low point for audio business Resonance Audio came a year after the financial crisis of 2008.自存倉Bryant Hwang, now 60, and who mainly handles the business side of the company's jobs in producing, mixing, recording and engineering music and sound, said of that bad patch in early 2009: "A lot of projects were delayed or cancelled."It was almost like the stock market. You sit there, everything you were planning for is gone, and you have to wait for it to come back."Now, he is speaking from a gleaming studio in Balestier Warehouse, and Resonance is doing decently for itself, though it still judders occasionally from the turbulence in the industry. His business partner and fellow director Leonard Fong, 40, with 14 years under his belt as an audio engineer, says with a laugh: "Everything crashed in 2008. But surprisingly, we still did two big projects in (late) 2009 - MTV World Stage and the F1 Rocks concerts."Things bounced back within a year and a half, but Mr Hwang says the industry's volatility is a constant. The music industry wants instant, social media-friendly stars, he says, and the demand for immediate success has led to a shorter turnaround in production time, resulting in more artistes falling by the wayside and "ridiculous" working hours for the two partners. The digital revolution, with easy downloads of music and falling sales of physical media, has not helped. As a result, the company's annual revenue, which is in the hundreds of thousands, has been up and down over the years; last year ended in a net loss. The company's monthly revenue also varies widely. In good months, it makes $50,000, and in the weaker ones, just $15,000.Mr Hwang reflects ruefully: "It's very boom or bust, feast or famine. You have to learn how to ride through this."Despite the turbulence though, the 11-year-old company has scored its own coups, having worked with the big names in Mandopop such as Jacky Cheung, Emil Chau, Stefanie Sun, Kit Chan and Ah-Mei.Resonance works primarily with arrangers, composers, producers and artistes, but has also recorded high-profile live events here and overseas, such as the Andrea Bocelli Live In Singapore concert at the Botanic Gardens in 2010 and the Good Charlotte concert in Kuala Lumpur three years before that. Its most recent project was the recording of the score for a big-budget EVA Air commercial starring Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro.Resonance typically charges $2,000 to $4,000 for recording, mixing and mastering an advertisement; it has also done movie scores and sound design, charging $12,000 to $15,000 per job.The pair agree that, tough as it has been through the years, things are, on the whole, better than when the business was just starting up. Back then, they were carting their equipment around in a van to different studio facilities.Mr Hwang says: "It started as an informal partnership among four of us in 2002, working hands on."He had met his business partners, including Mr Fong, while he was a business development consultant in the late 1990s for the now-defunct Form Holdings, the owner of the then-largest recording studio in Singapore. When Form Hold迷你倉新蒲崗ngs folded, the quartet decided to strike out on their own, and made a conscious decision to refrain from applying for grants from the Media Development Authority. They wanted the independence to do their own thing, says Mr Hwang. They started out doing live recordings because they thought that providing professional-quality live recording services was a growth area. They were wrong.Mr Hwang says: "Here, it doesn't grow the way it does in the West, probably because our venues are quite limited and small, and promoters pay a huge premium to bring acts in. To get recording rights is very, very expensive."Of the original four partners, he and Mr Fong are left. One has left the business and the other remains a shareholder in the company. The breakthrough came when MTV hired Resonance to do trouble-shooting on the live recording of a series of concerts. This led to other projects such as the MTV Asia Awards; MTV went on to become their first big client for music broadcast and live recording, which hugely raised their regional profile. The duo eventually did well enough to invest $500,000 in furnishing and equipping their studio in 2007. It also hires part-timers and freelancers. But challenges have since surfaced in the industry. One challenge has been the rise of home studios.Mr Fong says: "The equipment is getting cheap. Everyone who's a songwriter and has a computer can start working at home, bypassing the recording studio. Even some high-profile artistes have gone to home studios."Mr Hwang says that arrangers are also feeling the heat of economic pressures: "Instead of carrying more new musicians, they start doing things like programming and synthesising. This cuts their usage of studios and they earn more. They get pressured into trying to build their own studios and doing that little bit of recording work."Mr Fong says that Resonance Audio has been able to rise above such challenges by thinking ahead of their competitors, being open to collaborating with others and venturing into previously uncharted territory. For example, some studios have "a completely dead listening environment where sound cannot breathe". But this is not the kind of environment in which 99 per cent of consumers listen to music, says Mr Fong. The studio at Resonance was thus designed and built to create a natural and accurate listening environment. He added that the company has also been "fastidious" about every piece of audio gear purchased. Some 11 years ago, it became the first to use a digital work station, an electronic system designed for recording, editing and playing back digital audio.Mr Hwang says that, in the long run, the goal of the company is to continue playing a supporting role in quality projects. It is also looking to diversify its business, but hasn't quite decided what it intends to do just yet.He says: "It's quite unclear as a landscape, but we will find a niche for ourselves."HAVE an interesting story on an SME to share?

By Mark GrahamFor China DailyPeople in the China wine trade are surprised to find that Le Ponty wines, one of the Bordeaux region’s most esteemed wineries, has a personal presence in the country, in the shape of the owner’s daughter, Helene Ponty.迷你倉價錢Most winemakers trying to push their products in China content themselves with promotional visits, but Ponty lives and works in Beijing and travels throughout the country to promote Le Ponty wines. The mission has proved to be an unqualified success: the winery now ships more than 20,000 bottles a year to China, a quarter of its annual production. People in the wine trade are fascinated to discover that Helene Ponty is based in the country, is formidably knowledgeable about Bordeaux wines in particular and French wines in general, and has taken the trouble to learn to speak Chinese.“I usually describe our vineyard as a boutique traditional family vineyard located on the right bank of Bordeaux, aiming to produce elegant wines with a perfect balance between freshness and intensity,” she says “We have three estates and each is between 3 and 5 hectares, so our production is very limited, but it allows us to be very picky about the quality. We pick by hand and prune carefully.“In China what I am trying to do is to find good distributors in different provinces. I am working with them and building the story of the wine, which is very important, showing them that if they work with me then they really have a direct relationship with the winery. I go to events and give them the story of the wine.”Initially, Ponty came to China with Hong Kong-born boyfriend Erik Chan, with no immediate plan to enter the wine trade. But the opportunities quickly became apparent. Also Chan’s family was able to help with contacts and connections. Her business brain was already sharply honed from studying for an MBA in the United States, where she met Chan, and later by working for a management consultancy in New York.“When you are in China it takes a lot of time to set up a company and convince people about what you are doing,” she says. “The feedback has been amazing.” People love that I am here and can talk to them about the wine and winery and my family history. They love the wine. A lot of people say it is the best they have tried.”Ponty Vineyards was founded more than a century ago by the 26-year-old’s great-grandfather in Canon Fronsac, one of the smaller regions of Bordeaux, which has fewer than 50 producers. The current patriarch, Michel Ponty, is president of the local association of winegr迷你倉wers. The five wines exported to China, most of them merlot, are sold to wholesalers for RMB100($16; 12 euros) to RMB300, ultimately finding their way into private clubs and as corporate gifts. To date Ponty has imported 24,000 bottles, with another 12,000-bottle shipment scheduled this summer. The 26-year-old is an avid traveler, venturing regularly to cities throughout China in search of potential distributors. Le Ponty now has representation in Wuhan, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen, with its head office in Beijing.Says Ponty: “When you are in Europe you hear people talking about the China market. But when you are in China, there is no such thing as the Chinese market, or the Chinese consumer, because the second- and third-tier cities are so different. We are trying to get more into those cities and help them to understand wine. It is a diverse market.“But I feel more and more people the middle classes are starting to drink wine, appreciate wine and be curious about wine. If you could reach only 10 percent of the population that is a huge market.”Oenophiles in the major cities are already appreciative of Le Ponty’s wine quality and the rich history of the chateau, which was founded in 1905. The flagship wine is Chateau Grand Renouil, a regular award winner, which is made from 60-year-old vines; another vintage, Chateau du Pavillon, is made from vines that surround the family home. The rich and storied history of Le Ponty fascinates Chinese audiences, all the more so when the facts are relayed by an individual who can trace her family wine connections back four generations. In fact Ponty is finding her diary full of speaking engagements, giving talks on how to appreciate wine to various companies and groups. The etiquette of wine drinking, how to hold the glass, the proper way to store and pour wines, the way different products pair with different foods — are among the topics in her lecture repertoire.“People really like these little tips and to hear the stories behind the wines,” she says. “I talk about wine and focus on the basics, so when people go to a dinner they do not look clueless. I explain about different regions and the difference between Old-World and New-World wines. I also explain the Appellation d’Origine Controlee, the AOC system in France, which is a guarantee of quality. A lot of people do not realize that. All our wines are AOC.”provided to China DailyHelene Ponty says it takes a lot of time to set up a business and convince people about what you are doing in China, but the feedback is amazing.新蒲崗迷你倉

Though Viv Forbes ("Green energy is the past, not the future", August 22) dislikes the present Australian green energy portfolio, I think Hong Kong is suitable to adopt the failing European green energy models, as Hong Kong has a greater amount of sunshine, even in winter.迷你倉But our Environmental Protection Department has never suggested a solar power plan to work with CLP Power and Hongkong Electric in order to supply a cleaner and more sustainable green and carbon-fuel power supply portfolio and help reduce the air contamination conditions in the city.Solar power can be used for street 新蒲崗迷你倉amp illumination, in building corridors and for many government non-essential lighting systems. The carbon fuel system can cut in whenever the solar system is down.I am sure there are many ready-made examples available in Europe for problem periods, such as contingency plans to cover solar energy supplies on cloudy days, or provide power when there is no wind.A simple cut-and-paste action by Hong Kong, followed by some technical modifications, can help improve our air quality and bring down our electric bills a lot.But it seems nobody is interested in doing the job.Pang Chi-ming, Fanlingmini storage

Source: Tampa Tribune, Fla.迷你倉價錢Aug. 25--The 2011 Land Rover was stopped at the intersection past the white line, its front jutting out into busy U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor. The driver was slumped in her seat.Motorists heading south had to swerve to avoid hitting the sport utility vehicle that afternoon in October, drawing the attention of a Pinellas County Sheriff's deputy, who pulled over and got out of his squad car.For about two minutes, Cpl. Chester Johnson shouted at the driver, slapped the window and waved his arms before he managed to rouse 42-year-old Sheri Lynn Lutich of Palm Harbor. She seemed so intoxicated, he felt impelled to help her out of the Land Rover, and paramedics arriving at the scene recommended she be taken to the hospital, according to court documents. Before the ambulance left, Johnson asked Lutich whether she would voluntarily provide a blood sample, and he says she agreed, signing a waiver and thrusting her wrists out, saying "OK."Her blood-alcohol, it would turn out, was 0.425 and 0.427, more than five times the legal threshold at which a Florida driver is presumed intoxicated. Lutich was later charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. But a judge this summer said her blood sample wasn't admissible evidence and told prosecutors they couldn't use it in court. The reason: She was in no state to volunteer a blood sample that afternoon on Oct. 11."It appears to the court that her mental state at the time the consent was allegedly given was not one which was very conscious or alert of what was going on around her," Pinellas County Judge James Pierce said following a June 26 hearing before issuing his ruling, according to a recording of the proceeding. The case is still winding through the judicial system, with a trial scheduled for Dec. 18.The hearing in June was held after Lutich's attorney, Kevin Hayslett, filed a motion on March 5 to have the blood-alcohol results thrown out of court. At the hearing, Johnson testified that he was concerned about the woman's medical condition, so he tried conducting a DUI investigation while keeping in mind something else might be wrong with her."If she could walk, and did not迷你倉appear in need of medical treatment I would have arrested her for DUI," Johnson testified, according to the recording. "I did not want to arrest her because that was not in her best interest at the time. Nothing provides a better snapshot than a blood draw. She understood enough to thrust her wrists out and say 'Yes, OK.' "But Hayslett essentially argued that Johnson should have told Lutich she could also submit to a breath or urine test, something Hayslett says was required by law, although neither is typically performed on the side of the road in Pinellas County.Johnson has said Lutich couldn't take a breath test anyway, because her speech was slurred, she was sobbing intermittently, and her thumb dexterity was such she wouldn't be able to hold the mask in place.Hayslett also accused Johnson of coercing Lutich to submit to the blood draw rather than obtaining it from her voluntarily. And, he argued, Lutich needed to have been injured in an accident for Johnson to have the authority to get a blood draw. When Johnson said he received permission to draw Lutich's blood, he had her sign the back of a consent form, rather than the front of the form, where there is a box for a signature. Lutich wasn't able to control a pen well enough to leave her signature on a line in the box on the front of the form, court documents state.Pierce objected to that as well. The only other witness who testified at the June 26 hearing was Bryan Borrelli, the SunStar paramedic with Johnson and Lutich at the time of the blood draw. Though Lutich appeared to be in an altered mental state, her mental acuity was such that she appeared capable of answering yes and no questions, Borrelli testified.By and large, the rest of his testimony dovetailed with Johnson's account, until one exchange between Hayslett and him."She wasn't in a state of mind to have a conversation about what would be in her best interest" at that time, Hayslett said."In my estimation no," Borrelli said.sthompson@tampatrib.com(727) 215-6504Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Tampa Tribune (Tampa, Fla.)
