Facing Foreclosure: Mortgage meltdown
Source: Tulsa World, Okla.self storageOct. 20--A look at three settlement programs sparked by the housing crisisDuring the foreclosure crisis and resulting fiscal mess, so many mortgage servicing companies refused to work with homeowners that Congress passed the Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP.The idea was to offer incentives encouraging servicers to provide mortgage modifications and aid for troubled homeowners.By any measure, it has not gone as planned.Unfair and illegal practices by mortgage servicers and lenders have resulted in a host of lawsuits nationally, as well as three major settlements that affect Oklahomans who have lost a home to foreclosure or are currently fighting it.NATIONAL MORTGAGE SETTLEMENTTotal settlement: $25 billionWhere the money comes from: The nation's five largest mortgage servicers -- Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citimortgage and Ally/GMAC -- agreed to pay $25 billion in funds and various forms of relief to avoid prosecution by the U.S. Department of Justice and attorneys general of 49 states.Where the money went: Approximately $1.5 billion to compensate borrowers who lost their homes to foreclosure from Jan. 1, 2008, to Dec. 31, 2011. Those who applied should receive checks totaling just under $1,500. Because Attorney General Scott Pruitt opted out of the national settlement, Oklahomans were not eligible for these funds.About $3.5 billion was split between 50 states based on population and foreclosure statistics.Key features: Improved servicing standards for the nation's five largest mortgage servicers, funding to assist borrowers in saving their homes from foreclosure, direct payments to homeowners who may have been wrongly foreclosed upon, direct payments to states to use for their own programs and needs.RESOLUTION OKLAHOMATotal settlement: $18.7 millionWhere the money comes from: Attorney General Scott Pruitt opted Oklahoma out of the national semini storagetlement. Instead, he used the $18.7 million direct payment the state would have received under the national settlement to craft his own program.Where the money went (so far):Payouts to residents: $4.9 millionLegal service vouchers: $128,466Payments to Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma: $1.2 millionPayments to Oklahoma Bar Association: $111,239Total: $6.3 millionKey features: Direct restitution payments of $5,000 to $20,000 for homeowners who can prove some level of harm, such as dual-tracking or robo-signing; vouchers to hire private attorneys and other funds for legal assistance; and free foreclosure defense training for members of the Oklahoma Bar Association.INDEPENDENT FORECLOSURE REVIEWTotal settlement: $3.6 billionWhere the money comes from: In April 2011, federal banking regulators issued enforcement orders against 14 large mortgage servicers for deficient mortgage servicing and foreclosure practices. The orders required those servicers to retain independent consultants to review foreclosures in process or completed in 2009 or 2010. The review sought to identify financial injury to borrowers that resulted from errors, misrepresentations and other deficiencies in the foreclosure process. But payments to homeowners stalled while consultants were paid $1.5 billion. In January 2013, the plan for a case-by-case review was scrapped in favor of direct payments to qualifying homeowners.Key features: The Independent Foreclosure Review requires those servicers to provide compensation or other remediation for identified financial injury. Though some individuals may receive as much as $125,000 in compensation, it is estimated that most will only get $300. So far, about 17,000 Oklahoma cases have been paid more than $18 million through the fund, records show.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)

Badgers football: Chris Borland continues to amaze during monster senior season
Source: The Wisconsin State JournalOct. 19--CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- When the two Ohio guys got together last week -- both of them football players, both of them linebackers -- there must have been some lively give and take between Chris Borland and Chris Spielman.Borland, from Kettering, Ohio, is the inside linebacker for the University of Wisconsin football team who is putting together a monster senior season.Spielman, 48, from Massillon, Ohio, was a two-time All-American linebacker at Ohio State, a former Lombardi Award winner who went on to a Pro Bowl career with the Detroit Lions and now works as an analyst for ESPN.Borland's memories of Spielman as a player are from his time with the Lions."I was a Packers fan, so I grew up watching (Brett) Favre carve him up a little bit," Borland said. "We joked about that."But most of the limited time the two spent together was Borland being a sponge and soaking up any tidbits he could from Spielman."He's an absolute inspiration for a linebacker," Borland said.Spielman worked plenty of UW games before the 35-6 victory over Northwestern and had great respect for Borland. But Spielman came away even more impressed after watching what he believes is one of the nation's best college linebackers performing at the top of his game."You can take all of the measurables you want, the one thing he's always done, he makes plays," Spielman said in a phone interview this week. "There are a lot of guys that are 6-4, 240, 4.5 (second) 40 guys, but you look at their production, it's not where his is."He's got the most important quality that overcomes any of the measurables where he might be lacking -- that's the ability to make plays. He's got a great burst, he has instincts, he's got all of the tools necessary to be successful."The 25th-ranked Badgers (4-2, 2-1 in the Big Ten Conference), face Illinois (3-2, 0-1) tonight at Memorial Stadium, with Borland coming off a highly productive two-game stretch. He matched a career high with 16 tackles against Ohio State. He set the mark on UW's most recent trip to Champaign, a 28-17 win in 2011.On top of that, UW coach Gary Andersen announced Thursday there's a chance Borland will attempt long field goals for this game -- anything in the range of 45 yards. Borland has never attempted a field goal in a game, though he was 3-for-3 on extra-point attempts against Hawaii as a freshman in 2009."Nothing with Chris surprises me anymore," sophomore quarterback Joel Stave said earlier in the week.Stave was referencing a video that was released following a segment Borland taped on the field last week with senior outside linebacker Ethan Armstrong and Spielman. From 30 yards away, Borland called his shot, "crossbar," then threw a football that nailed the crossbar on the first take."It's not an easy thing to do," Stave said. "I think pretty much all of the quarterbacks have done that at some point in their careers. Coming off the field after summer workouts, we'll all line up on the 40 or something and chuck it at the crossbar. We'll get it every once in a while."Borland's skills with a ball, whether kicking or throwing, are legendary. He's said to be able to throw a pass 40 yards -- with his off hand. A former soccer player, he has been known to aim the Jugs machine at his feet, then tip the high-speed footballs with a foot up to his hands. But it's his linebacker skills that have earned the notice of NFL teams. Borland is listed at 5-foot-11 but said early in his college career he's actually 5-10. At one point, the 2014 draft appeared to be another referendum on height, just like it was for former Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson in 2012.But Borland is playing so well right now, Spielman said his lack of ideal height should not be an issue."I know the scouts like him, I've talked to a couple NFL guys," Spielman said. "The thing he does, he's got a burst. He can get off blocks, he has instincts and he produces."Now, I don't know how that will translate into what round he will get drafted in, but it translates into being a good football player that certainly, if he stays healthy, I think will have a good career in the NFL."It begins with tackling, something of a lost art in college football. During last week's broadcast, Spielman noted Borland's proper tackling form, keeping his head up."See what you hit an儲存 hit what you see," Spielman said during the broadcast."I just don't think it's emphasized at practice, and (players) are not held accountable," Spielman said during the interview. "I've talked to many coaches about that, I think they're trying to get back to that."The reason for that, one, is everybody is so into scheme now ... and nobody wants to get anybody hurt at practice (by tackling). You don't have to take guys down, you can still emphasize it and hold people accountable to the fundamentals at practice."Borland didn't become a linebacker until he arrived at UW, so he credits his former position coaches with teaching him how to tackle."They all stressed the fundamentals of tackling," Borland said. "We've felt the benefits of that. I think we have a lot of sure tacklers on our defense. It's important. Not only is it the right way to make plays, you also keep yourself healthy and force takeaways, too."When Borland gets knocked to the ground, he always bounces up quickly. Spielman referenced the play against Ohio State, where Borland missed his first shot at speedy quarterback Braxton Miller, then scrambled to his feet and still made the tackle after a short gain.Spielman said perhaps the best NFL comparison for Borland is Zach Thomas, who was listed at 5-foot-11 and played 12 seasons for the Miami Dolphins, making the Pro Bowl eight times, with more than 1,700 tackles."From what I've seen, the best way to describe Chris is he's a natural playing the position," Spielman said. "I don't want to say it's effortless, but he sees it, he feels it. I call him a more athletic Zach Thomas."One reason height is not as crucial as it used to be for inside linebackers is because the game is changing. Linebackers are being asked to play in space more in pass coverage, as opposed to taking on blocks from linemen in a confined space."Maybe when I was coming out that was an issue," said Spielman, who was listed at 6 feet. "I know it was an issue for me. But nowadays, when you have guys (under 6 feet) who have played that position at a high level, like Zach, or London Fletcher or Sam Mills or Mike Singletary ... as long as you're producing, I don't think that's the major issue anymore."Borland has produced, with 364 career tackles -- including 44 1/2 tackles for loss. He has 15 career sacks, 18 pass breakups, three interceptions and six fumble recoveries. He needs just one forced fumble to tie the FBS record of 14, which is shared by five players. The issue for him in the NFL will be the same thing as for most linebackers: trying to hold up in pass coverage against lightning-quick running backs such as the New Orleans Saints' Darren Sproles."You can get the best linebacker ever to walk the face of the earth, he's not going to match up with Darren Sproles," Spielman said."The biggest challenge (Borland) will have is the demands put on him in man coverage. Because those guys are so fast and so quick, it's tough to deal with."Borland may not run a great 40 time at the scouting combine in February, but he compensates with his quickness and athleticism."I think he's very quick," Spielman said. "Quickness is more important than 40-yard speed. As long as he plays quick, and what he does have is a burst, he can change directions fast."Maybe the best quality Borland has is his mind. He enhances the physical skills he has with great instincts, honed from hours of watching video."People ask me what quality as a linebacker I valued most," Spielman said. "One was my vision, you can see things developing. Things happen fast when you're standing four yards across from the ball and people are going different directions. You have to be able to see it. He sees it."In the end, playing linebacker is not all that complicated, Spielman said."Linebacker comes down to two things, see the ball and get the ball," Spielman said. "If you get there faster than anybody else, you'll be a player.""They all stressed the fundamentals of tackling. We've felt the benefits of that. I think we have a lot of sure tacklers on our defense." -- Senior inside linebacker Chris Borland on how coaches have helped the defenseCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, Wis.)

URL:.chinanews.com.cn/it/2013/10-20/5400777.shtml

Volleyball: Section 1 playoffs are like a mini-state tournament
Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn. Oct. 19--Two of the top four teams in the Class AA state volleyball rankings are in the Section 1AA volleyball playoffs.Four of the top nine ranked teams in Class A are in the Section 1 playoffs.Only one team in Section 1A and one in 1AA can make it to the Xcel Energy Center for the state tournaments, Nov. 7-9. That means a lot of good volleyball players will have their seasons come to a close without the opportunity to play for a state title, or even a section title.Such is life annually in Section 1 volleyball.Section 1A playoffs begin Monday with six first-round matches. The Section 1AA tournament begins Thursday with subsection quarterfinal matches at eight home sites.SECTION 1AAEast SubsectionTop-seeded Chatfield (21-8) is unranked, but head coach Troy Swancutt's Gophers are on quite a roll heading into the postseason. They have won 11 of their past 12 matches, with the only loss in that stretch coming at Fillmore Central, the top-ranked team in the state in Class A. Half of the Gophers' eight losses came against ranked teams -- two against Fillmore Central, one against Belle Plaine (No. 3 in Class AA) and one against Concordia Academy (No. 10 in Class AA).Chatfield is one of just two teams in the subsection, along with No. 3 seed Dover-Eyota (11-7), with a winning record. The Gophers are led by a pair of seniors -- setter Gabrielle Salisbury and libero Alex Duxbury.No. 2 seed Caledonia (13-16) is the defending section champion. It has won five of its past six matches, losing only a home match against Fillmore Central in that stretch. No other team in the subsection has more than eight victories.West SubsectionJust how dominant has top-seeded Stewartville (22-1) been this season? The Tigers didn't drop a game until their 12th match of the season, a 3-1 victory against Kenyon-Wanamingo.A balanced and talented team, No. 2-ranked Stewartville's lone loss this season was a 2-1 setback to Prior Lake, the No. 8-ranked team in Class AAA, in the championship match of the Eastview Invitational on Oct. 12. Stewartville is led by senior setter Stephanie Schmidt and senior hitter Maddie Hettinger. If the seeds hold up, a rematch of last year's subsection final will take place between Stewartville and No. 2 seed Kasson-Mantorville (24-5), the No. 4-ranked team in the state in Class AA. K-M, which defeated Stewartville in last year's subsection final, dropped a 3-0 decision to the Tigers in their only meeting so far this season. This subsection figures to be competitive throughout the postseason, as seven of the eight teams have at least 10 wins this year.Third-seeded Cannon Falls (15-7) will be no pushover. The Bombers went 10-2 in Hiawatha Valley League play this season, losing only to Stewartvi存倉le and K-M.SECTION 1AEast SubsectionAt least one team in top 10 or receiving votes in the Class A state poll won't make it as far as the subsection title match. No. 1-ranked Fillmore Central (29-2) is the top seed in the subsection, while No. 7-ranked Mabel-Canton (30-2) is the No. 2 seed. Goodhue (20-7) is receiving votes in the state rankings and the Wildcats are the No. 3 seed in the subsection. And the team lurking as the No. 4 seed? Defending subsection champion Wabasha-Kellogg.The top-seeded Falcons are by far the hottest team in the section right now. Their only losses this season came to Rosemount, a 20-win Class AAA school, in mid-September at the Wabasha-Kellogg Invitational. Fillmore Central has won 18 consecutive matches and, remarkably, has dropped just one game in that span. The Falcons are led by their two seniors, hitters Taylor Case and Tori Peterson, and junior setter and captain Morgan Malley.Led by all-state hitter Belle Sand, the Mabel-Canton Cougars are back in the hunt for another subsection title. The Cougars, who have six seniors with a good amount of postseason experience. Their only losses this season came at the Class A Showcase to No. 2-ranked Southwest Christian and No. 4 Win-E-Mac. M-C hadn't lost a game in any of its victories this season until it beat Lyle/Pacelli 3-1 on Tuesday in the Southeast Conference championship match.Goodhue, the No. 3 seed, has lost seven times this season, with five of those coming against ranked teams. The other two setbacks came against Cannon Falls, a Class AA team, and W-K, the defending subsection champ. The Wildcats are playing well in recent weeks, winning seven of their past eight matches.West SubsectionThis subsection includes the No. 5-ranked team in the state, defending state champion Faribault B.A. (13-9) and the No. 9 team in the state, Hayfield (15-7). They are the top two seeds in the subsection, which figures to be more competitive than it has been in recent seasons, as five of the top six seeds have at least 13 victories.Hayfield has been strong against Class A teams. Five of the Vikings seven losses came against Class AA or AAA teams, while another came at the hands of Goodhue, a 20-win team that has received votes in the state poll. Hayfield is led by senior hitter Dani Wagner and setters Jessica Foster and Maggie Streightiff.Third-seeded Medford is 22-7, while Blooming Prairie, the No. 4 seed, is 21-6. Lyle/Pacelli, the Southeast Conference West Division champion, is the No. 6 seed with a 14-10 record. Blooming Prairie has won seven of its past eight matches and had a nine-match winning streak earlier this season.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Post-Bulletin Visit the Post-Bulletin at .postbulletin.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存
