Source: Jordan Times, AmmanNov.mini storage 13--AMMAN -- Media representatives, lawyers, officials and legislators on Tuesday called for mechanisms to promptly implement recommendations by world countries related to freedom of the press. In 2009, countries at the UN Universal Periodic Review of the country's human rights record issued one recommendation on improving media freedoms in Jordan. In 2013, they issued 18 such recommendations, of which the government accepted 15 and voiced reservations over three, Nidal Mansour, president of the Centre for Defending the Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ), said during a workshop held under the title: "Towards a legislative environment that enhances media freedoms", which attracted judges, lawyers, officials, legislators and media personnel. The government voiced reservations on a recommendation to take measures to enhance and support the freedom and independence of the media, especially electronic media, and to consider cancelling a provision requiring websites to register, according to a CDFJ document presented during the workshop.Jordan also voiced reservations over scrapping recent amendments to the Penal Code, the Information Systems Crimes Law and the Press and Publications Law and removing financial obstacles facing media outlets. Some of the recommendations that the government accepted include cancelling or amending all articles in the Penal Code that impose "blatantly unfair" restrictions on freedom of expression, as well as amending the Press and Publications Law to ensure full protection for freedom of ex儲存ression and to reduce restrictions imposed on publishing information on the Internet."As Jordan accepted the recommendations, it needs to implement them and we should draw up a plan for this purpose," Mansour said.A committee involving all stakeholders should be formed to look into the implementation of these recommendations, he added.Mahmoud Ababneh, secretary general of the Judicial Council, agreed with Mansour."Media is very important, especially at this crucial stage. We need to work together to enhance Jordan's image abroad. We need to address the loopholes when it comes to freedom of expression and the media to improve the situation," Ababneh said at the workshop."Ensuring freedom of expression is crucial to enhancing the country's image," he added.Participants in the workshop called for a participatory approach by all involved entities when endorsing legislation related to freedom of expression and the media. The legislative authority can play a key role in supporting legislation that enhances freedom of expression, they stressed, calling for laws that address social changes.Last week, the government said Jordan accepted 126 out of 173 recommendations that were made by countries at the UN Universal Periodic Review of the Kingdom's human rights record in Geneva in October. As for the other recommendations, the Kingdom refused 34 and is currently studying the remaining 13.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) Visit the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) at .jordantimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉
