It was the first time the index that measures the pace of Inland manufacturing has been below 50 -- the level separates growth from contraction -- in 2013.But the sector showed encouraging strength on the national level. The index released by Tempe, Ariz.-based Institute for Supply Management rose to 55.4 in July from 50.9 in the previous month. It marked the largest expansion in the sector in more than two years, and increases in production and hiring suggested that factories could play a key role in an improved economy in the second half of the year.Raymond Sfeir, an economist at Chapman University, noted that the national study found the pace of factory output increased from 53 to 65 in just one month."That's huge," Sfeir said. "It looks like consumers are more optimistic than they have been in the past, and the employment picture has improved as well. All of that has contributed to an improved economy."Orange-based Chapman University recently released a study of California's manufacturing sector that suggested a busy third quarter, especially in the production of durable goods. These are the types of items, including furniture, large kitchen appliances and vehicles that are typically purchased by people who are comfortable about their finances.Also, a sharply appreciating housing market is probably contributing to that, Sfeir said."We're hearing reports that people are starting to take money out of their homes迷你倉庫" he said.
