邦咯海島節資訊日期:31-8-2013至15-9-2013網址:.pangkorislandfestival.com/電郵:info@pangkorislandfestival.com聯絡電話:017-8700585;新蒲崗迷你倉

  • Disaster funding provides new homes to Hurricane Dolly victims

Source: The Monitor, McAllen, TexasSept. 12--PHARR -- Juanita Candanoza, 85, was beaming as she looked out the windows of her new home Monday afternoon. The Las Milpas resident struggled for five years in a broken-down house with holes in the floor, roof and ceiling from Hurricane Dolly flooding. Six weeks ago, Affordable Homes of South Texas leveled the structure and built a 1,150-square-foot, two-bedroom, green-painted cottage in its place.Monday, the group threw a small party to welcome Candanoza home."Everything," she said in Spanish when asked what her favorite part of the house was, praising the workers. "Everything is wonderful."The project is the second of 840 Rio Grande Valley homes to be completed that received funding from the Disaster Recovery Housing Program, said Ken迷你倉出租DeJarnett, Affordable Homes director of real estate development. The program provides Department of Housing and Urban Development funding via the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council to assist people still suffering housing problems from Hurricanes Dolly and Ike in 2008.Affordable Homes is one of 15 area groups including nonprofits and construction companies who are now using the funds to repair and build houses for applicants, DeJarnett said.Candanoza's daughter Janie Pedraza said it was a relief to see her mother under a roof no longer leaking water."This came at exactly the right time," she said.efindell@themonitor.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Monitor (McAllen, Texas) Visit The Monitor (McAllen, Texas) at .themonitor.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

  • MMA football: A new season, a new conference

Source: Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass. Sept. 11--BUZZARDS BAY -- After a long and arduous preseason, Massachusetts Maritime Academy gets its first test Thursday night when the Buccaneers host New York Maritime in the Sixth Annual Chowder Bowl at 7 p.m. at Clean Harbors Stadium.MMA coach Jeremy Cameron returns 63 lettermen and 16 starters from a 2012 squad that went 5-4, the program's third straight winning season."We're healthy right now and look to have (positional) depth on both sides of the ball," said Cameron, now in his ninth season as MMA coach. The Bucs face a SUNY-Maritime squad coming off a 3-6 record. The Privateers beat MMA 20-14 in last year's season-opener in Throggs Neck, N.Y. MMA is looking for its first victory in six tries against its New York rivals.New York Maritime features a run-oriented, option attack paced by running back Paul Briggs and quarterback Zachary Chilcott. After competing in the New England Football Conference for four decades, MMA takes on a new challenge this fall in the newly formed Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.Former NEFC Bogan Division rivals Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Westfield State and Worcester State will be joined by NEFC Boyd teams UMass-Dartmouth and Plymouth State, along with Western Connecticut, in the MASCAC league.Led by senior quarterback Mike Stanton, the Bucs hope to regain their potent passing attack from a year ago. • Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability cancels popular Build It Green home tour

Source: The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. Sept. 10--After 11 years, the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability will no longer host its annual green homes tour. The Build It Green Home Tour was a popular event, drawing about 1,000 participants annually in a self-guided visit to Portland's sustainable homes.Alisa Kane, the bureau's green building and development manager, said multiple factors influenced the decision to stop organizing the tour."It was a mix of considerations," Kane said. "Budget was certainly one of them, and we also wanted to open it up to a broader audience."Organizing the tour became a daunting task after the bureau's green building team lost a member during the most recent budget cycle.Plus, Kane said, Portland has a glut of home tours, from sustainable building, to bathroom remodels, to tiny homes."The market got quite bloated," she said.Instead, the bureau this year teamed up with Southeast Portland Sunday Parkways to place a "Green Spot" at each stop on the Aug. 25 bike tour.At booths along the parkway, visitors learned about solar installations, community resources such as tool libraries and public fruit trees, gardening and community-supported agriculture, and clean energy, among other topics. The goal, Kane said, was to reach a more diverse audience than Build It Green. On a sunny day, Sunday Parkways can attract tens of thousands of participants."It's not as in depth -- people aren't able to go into homes and talk to owners -- but we thought it would be an interesting way to show people these features," Kane said.Kane said the bureau has fielded multiple calls from tour enthusiasts wondering whether Build It would happen this year. Those interested in touring sustainable homes havmini storage another option an hour out of town. The 12th annual Gorge Green Home Tour, sponsored by Gorge Owned and the Energy Trust of Oregon, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 5 in Hood River and Mosier.Gorge Owned Executive Director Lindsay Miller sees the Portland tour cancellation as an opportunity for her group's tour, which in past years has attracted between 75 and 100 people."We try to represent a broad range of green living strategies," Miller says. "Our focus has really been that green is not just for people with enough money to buy the latest and greatest technology."The self-guided tour will feature 10 green homes in Hood River and Mosier. Tickets are $10 per person, $5 for those who plan to tour by bike, or $25 for carpool vehicles. To purchase tickets and obtain a tour map, visit the Gorge Owned website. Tickets are also available at Waucoma Bookstore in Hood River, Klindt's Independent Bookstore in The Dalles, Lorang Fine Art in Cascade Locks, or at Hood River Waterfront Park on the day of the tour.A public expo from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Springhouse Cellar Winery, 13 Railroad Ave., in Hood River, will kick off the gorge tour with green building presentations and appearances from the owners of this year's featured homes. As for the Portland tour, Kane said the bureau will not relaunch Build It Green in the foreseeable future. However, Portland sustainability officials would be willing to train another organization to take over tour management."For now, this is our opportunity to try looking at things differently," she said.--Kelly HouseCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Oregonian (Portland, Ore.)
