Rooms with a different kind of view
New, challenging escape mania sweeps capital.mini storage Zheng Xin reports Trapped in a dark and locked room with no recourse to anything but some seemingly irrelevant objects — a broken chair, some torn concert tickets and cryptic music — you can either wait for the call of death or crack the clues and get out of this hell. It’s a new mania in town, a role-playing game that takes place in a sealed chamber and requires participants to solve every puzzle and clue within a period of time to escape. It is obsessing many young people with its thrills and excitement. Room Escape evolved from a classic mystery-solving online game that requires players trapped in a sealed room to find clues and get out. Soon aficionados started longing for more thrills and were no longer satisfied with clicking a mouse, so a real-world version developed and mushroomed. According to Cai Nizhe, media officer of Omega Room Escape, one of the major room escapes based in the Chinese capital, the company has invested some 500,000 yuan ($81,700) as upfront investment, mostly covering the site use fees around bustling downtown areas including Chongwenmen, Zhongguancun and Taiyanggong and game research and development. “The designing of the rooms seems simple to some, but it requires knowledge from all walks of life: geography, engineering, mathematics and many others,” she said. “This is key to whether a room can survive in the market.” According to Cai, the major customers Omega welcomes are college students and white collar workers, who come to the rooms mainly for the thrill of the challenge or to relax from work pressure. “You have to get out of the room within the allotted time. The sense of urgency forces you to forget about all the annoyance and trouble at work, and the sense of excitement and joy after you escape from the room brings you more confidence than anything,” said Wang Zhuangyi, a bank clerk in Beijing. “This is a great channel to relieve pressure and stress built up from everyday work,” she said. However, sometimes the pressure was so great and mental stress so intense that some customers even tear down the equipment and decorations in the rooms, said Zhu Yumeng, chief operating officer of Taoquan, another room escape operator in Beijing. “There have been occasions when customers vent their anger, despite the presence of a surveillance camera,” he said. “The game is challenging for most customers and some are too impatient to crack the clues in a legitimate way.” Zhu said they set up the surveillance cameras not only to provide guidance and give clues to customers when they are deeply trapped and to ensure customers’ security, but also to monitor whether anyone damages the facilities in the room. In addition to the accumulated fun and reduced pressure thanks to the game, many company managers are also considering the challenge to boost teamwork and collaboration among company staff. Yang Xueli, a 27-year-old accountant from a foreign company based in Beijing, who participated in the room escape for the firsself storage time last month together with her co-workers, said the escape works as a great way to promote mutual communication and enhance mutual trust. “The escape requires a high degree of logical reasoning and teamwork, which could help promote group spirit and the relationships between colleagues,” said Yang. “You have more topics to talk about afterward, during lunch and leisure time as well,” she said. Despite the boom in room escapes in recent years, Zhu said the market has become a little saturated and a batch of room escapes might fall by the wayside soon. “The room escape requires the operators and designers to have a high degree of meticulous arrangements, strategic thinking and planning,” said Zhu. “It’s like an intelligence competition between you and the customers. No customer would be willing to pay for poor designs.” The craze will lose its attraction to many customers if the operators slow down in coming up with distinctive designs and projects or simply copy the ideas of others, he said. Some competitors even intentionally inflict damage upon the rooms of others or imitate others’ designs. Such improper competition would only lead the market downhill, he said. Zhu’s words are echoed by Cai. “You have to update the themes and designs of the rooms every month to cater for the increasingly picky and particular tastes and demands of the customers or get weeded out of the market,” she said. In addition to the rent for site use at these very bustling and prosperous downtown districts, the research, development and testing of newly-invented rooms take up a lot of investment and expense, said Cai. Omega is now cooperating with a team from Tsinghua University to provide more high-tech designs to the game to attract more customers. All rooms are based on logical reasoning and comprehensive research by the designers from Tsinghua University, who are mostly majoring in engineering sciences and therefore are more suited for the challenge. “In addition to some classic rooms we would love to retain, we are also constantly coming up with fresh new designs to meet the demands of our challenging customers,” she said. In addition, Omega is considering coming up with specifically designed rooms for English-speaking customers, and has plans to open new outlets soon. “We have received many English-speaking customers who have shown great interest in the game,” she said. Cai said she believed as more talented people joined the business and brainstormed more ideas and designs for the sealed rooms, more people from all walks of life will be attracted to the intelligence challenge. A heat sensor technology combined with Bluetooth alerts WMF users when to add ingredients during cookingFor 160 years, German cookware company WMF has churned out all manner of stainless-steel pots, knives and cutlery, but it has now officially entered the digital age.存倉Its ticket is a cooking system which uses heat sensor technology and a smartphone app to help home cooks turn out dishes simply.A coin-sized sensor embedded in the lid of one of its best-selling Vitalis pots senses the temperature inside it and estimates and adjusts the cooking time needed. Using Bluetooth wireless signals, the pot then pings the cook via his smartphone to add potatoes, tomatoes or whatever ingredient the recipe calls for.As a result, users will not have to hover over their stoves as their food cooks, but can better use the waiting time to, say, mop the floor or check their e-mail, says the company's spokesman. The app, which contains a clutch of recipes, also has the added function of helping the company reach a new generation of smartphone users, who are generally not only less kitchen-savvy than the traditional WMF user but also younger. It also opens a communication channel with them through a microsite. The Cook Assist technology, as it is called, was part of a showcase during a recent trip to Germany for media that was organised by the company.Unveiled in February this year at the Ambiente consumer goods trade show in Frankfurt, this modern take on kitchenware is now debuting in stores in Germany. For a start, it will be sold only within its domestic market, says Mr Frank Gforer, WMF's managing director for consumer goods. The 3.5-litre Vitalis pot with the Cook Assist technology costs €269 (S$450), while the 6.5-litre model including the technology costs €299.Should the technology prove a hit, he intends to take it international, he told those on the media trip. And WMF Singapore's managing director Volker Buchholz, 34, says Singapore would definitely be o迷你倉e of the target markets. "Just look at the number of smartphones in Singapore. There are more cellphones than people here," he says.Besides the general tech-savviness of the continent, Asia was also a natural fit because people here tend to prefer the steaming technique of cooking, a key highlight of the Vitalis pot. However, more development will be required, he adds. Besides translating the program, its recipes will have to be adjusted for Asian tastes. He says: "For instance, people here prefer their vegetables prepared in a more crispy manner, with more crunch. In Germany, broccoli, for one thing, is cooked until it's much softer."Digital technology innovations in the kitchen are infrequent but not unheard of. One recent development is a coffee-brewing machine for businesses, where orders are controlled by an iPhone or iPad. The machine was introduced two years ago by Denmark company Scanomat.Last year, product development company Quirky and GE teamed up to create a prototype named The Milkmaid, a smart milk jug that has pH and temperature sensors to measure when the milk has gone bad. If the milk has soured or is about to be finished, it sends a message to the smartphone with a reminder to buy more.Quirky said it was unsure when the product would be ready for retail. While the domestic and European markets continue to be WMF's main money-spinners, it foresees the importance of Asia to its growth. For instance, Mr Gforer says the company "may even want to set up a design department permanently in a major city in Asia, to get a mixture of the different regions' culture and needs".The company used to run a factory in Singapore, employing 400 to 500 metal workers to produce cutlery, between 1975 and 2002, but relocated it to China. In its most recent annual report, it also said that sales in China more than doubled year-on-year, and that "development in the Asian markets in particular was very positive".serl@sph.com.sgThe writer's trip was sponsored by WMF.自存倉

New wellness center aims to shake up diets
Source: The Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.self storageSept. 20--WILKES-BARRE -- Tucked into the rear of the Bicentennial Building's first floor is a new wellness center that opened this week. However, patrons won't find pieces of exercise equipment, yoga mats or workout videos for sale; the business centers on drinks -- three to be exact.A three-pronged diet of aloe, green tea and a shake are touted as viable breakfast and lunch options for those people looking to avoid poor food choices while not finding themselves hungry between meals.Operated by Dennis Machuca and his fiancee, Christina Caraballo, of Nanticoke, the business is called Nutrition Made Easy and it's part of the retail operations of the Herbalife brand of products.John Prokopovich, of Butler Township, has operated a Nutrition Made Easy in Hazleton and had been searching for more than a year for someone to set up shop in Wilkes-Barre. "We didn't want to find just anyone, we wanted to find the right people," Prokopovich said.In Machuca and Caraballo he believes he found the perfect people to pitch what he calls "a lifestyle, not a diet."Caraballo has been using the system for six months and said she迷你倉loves how it's impacted her life. That feeling of energy and lack of hunger are selling points, Caraballo said, noting that the location on Public Square was chosen because of the nearby foot traffic: a large number of college students, on-the-go-workers and people who use the nearby YMCA. Already this week, with no advertising other than word of mouth, Caraballo said business has been good and there's already a small group of regulars who have been in each day.The cost is $5 per visit, and there are take-home products available if customers choose to make their own products and use it on the weekends.Caraballo said she sees a bright future with Herbalife, a global nutrition and weight management company that's already selling in 89 countries. By entering the Wilkes-Barre market, she believes there is a big potential to not only make money but also change lives. The store, across from Jordan Shoes inside the building at 15 Public Square, is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) USM professor's book probes motives in 'Breaking Bad'
Source: Portland Press Herald, MaineSept.迷你倉 20--PORTLAND -- The AMC network's hit drama "Breaking Bad" has won the attention and adoration of critics and won a myriad of awards for its writing and acting -- but scholarly analysis? If anyone had a doubt about the complexity of characters such as chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-kingpin Walter White, his assistant Jesse Pinkman or drug lord Gustavo Fring, a University of Southern Maine professor has compiled a book of essays tracing the underlying motives that make their fictional world tick.David Pierson's book, "Breaking Bad: Critical Essays on the Context, Politics, Style and Reception of the Television Series," published by Lexington Books, is due out in November, the university said Friday. The compendium will explore such high-brow topics as "neoliberalism and its discourses; our cultural obsession with the economies of t儲存倉me and their manipulation; and the assumptions underlying White's criminal alias Heisenberg," the university wrote in an announcement of the book. The book will also look at topics closer to the surface, such as representations of masculinity, the depiction of Latinos in America, and impairment and disability, in addition to "Breaking Bad's" cinematic style and use of sound, music and setting.Pierson, who has a Ph.D. in mass communication, studies and writes about modern television programming. In the past, he has examined the inner workings of television shows such as "Combat!," "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigators," "The Fugitive," and "Seinfeld."The show's finale is set to air Sept. 29.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) Visit the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) at .pressherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

Apple fans in ‘gold rush’ over new iPhone models
The mainland iPhone fever hit Hong Kong yesterday as the latest models of the smartphone made their double debut in the city.迷你倉Despite the products’ simultaneous availability on the mainland, Apple fans still took the earliest flights here to secure the gold iPhone 5S, which they believe is “made to the British standard”.Zhang Mengshu, who arrived from Nanjing the night before, waited outside a store for four hours from 6am.He could not join the queue as the shop offered the new devices only to those who had registered online in advance. But he eventually met a local speculator, who offered him a silver 16-gigabyte iPhone 5S at HK$6,600 – HK$1,000 higher than the market price.“Silver isn’t my first choice. I wanted the gold one,” Zhang said. “But it’s better than buying one on the mainland because the quality of Apple products so文件倉d in Hong Kong is better.”Xiao Xuan from Beijing agreed: “Hong Kong products are made to the British standard.”Xiao, who registered online for two black 16GB iPhone 5S last week, was also disappointed at the limited supply of the gold-coloured models. They were sold out a couple of hours after online registration began on Tuesday. The iPhone 5S comes in gold, silver or space grey, and costs from HK$5,588 to HK$7,188, depending on storage size. They cost HK$1,000 more on the mainland due to exchange rate differences. Mainland Apple fans in Hong Kong were willing to pay up to HK$9,000 for the cheapest model, but their local counterparts were less impressed.“Many say the ‘S’ in iPhone 5S stands for ‘same’,” said Derek Ngai, who runs an Apple product workshop in Hong Kong. “Products sold here are also made in the mainland factories.”存倉

General: SunZia impairs mission
Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.self storageM.Sept. 20--LAS CRUCES -- The commanding general of White Sands Missile Range says there is no question that the proposed siting of a renewable energy transmission line across the northern extension of the huge military testing site would impair national defense missions.Brig. Gen. Gwen Bingham said in an interview here Thursday that the Department of Defense is trying to find a "win-win solution" on the controversial SunZia transmission line proposal. But she also said: "It's going to have a negative impact on our mission.""I'm not going to sit here and tell you that allowing the line will mean the end of White Sands Missile Range," Bingham said after addressing the Domenici Public Policy Conference at New Mexico State University. "But it will mean the end of some of the programs."SunZia developers are planning a $1.2 billion, 550-mile project to carry renewable energy from central New Mexico to Arizona. The proposal has SunZia crossing the 40-mile deep "northern extension" of the White Sands range.Bingham said high-altitude plane and missile testing is conducted daily over the area, while low-altitude testing is done 25 to 40 times a year.As the proposed line is now sited, Bingham said, "There's no way to do my missions with some of the weapons systems we're currently testing, now and into the future, because they would strike the line.""I'm talking about my weapons testing," the general said. "It would limit our use of the area by 30 percent."The U.S. Bureau of Land Management published a final environmental impact statement on SunZia in June, but the DOD wants the BLM to make changes to it. The U.S. Department of the Interior, the BLM's parent agency, has b迷你倉en discussing potential mitigation measures with the DOD to avoid impacts on White Sands' testing capabilities, but Sun-Zia developers say reopening BLM debate over the transmission line could kill the project, since approval of the environmental impact statement is already years behind schedule. The BLM is expected to decide on the issue later this month or in early October.Gov. Susana Martinez has joined the DOD in voicing concerns about the proposal, saying it would disrupt military activities, threaten national security and damage southern New Mexico's economy.Bingham did not address the SunZia proposal in her Domenici conference speech, but responded to Journal questions later. She said the DOD's official position, so far, is, "We're not opposed to SunZia. ... The point of contention is the siting. ... That's what we are trying to find a win-win solution for."Air and missile defense programs require use of that area ... and because they involve low-flying missiles, you can imagine that a power transmission line would impact (that mission)," she said."As it relates to siting the power transmission line -- where they want to site it -- it literally will have the effect of reducing my using that area by 30 percent."Bingham noted that White Sands is the largest DOD test area in the country, making it irreplaceable for certain kinds of military testing."The adversarial threats are getting longer, not shorter," the general said, referring to air and missile attack threats. "So, we need every inch of the range."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)

Bulletproof vest saves trooper in shootout with bank robbery suspect near New Melle
Source: St.迷你倉 Louis Post-DispatchSept. 20--UPDATED at 11:20 a.m. with information on bullet not penetrating trooper's vest; and account on what robber told bank customersST. CHARLES COUNTY --A Missouri Highway Patrol trooper and a bank robbery suspect shot each other this morning near New Melle. The bullet fired at the trooper's chest didn't penetrate his bulletproof vest. The 26-year-old trooper was shot "square in the chest, but the bullet did not break the vest he was wearing," said Sgt. Al Nothum of the Highway Patrol. "He should be fine, maybe a little bruising."The 64-year-old robbery suspect was hit at least once, maybe a couple times, in the legs, Nothum said. Authorities said they didn't think the suspect's injuries were life-threatening.Both the trooper and the suspect were taken to a hospital. Police did not release the names of the suspect or trooper. The trooper has been with the patrol about three years. The shootout happened along Highway F, about a mile from New Melle. The trooper had heard a description of a bank robber's getaway car and tried to stop the car near the intersection of Highway F near Route D in St. Charles County. The robbery happened Friday morning at the First Bank of Dutzow, in southeast Warren County. At 9:20 a.m. Friday, a man walked into the bank lobby and pulled out a handgun."You know what this is," he shouted, announcing the holdup, according to police."He had them put their hands up, and told the tellers to give him the top bills out of the trays," said Warren mini storageounty Sheriff Kevin T. Harrison. He told the tellers to make sure there were no dye packs in the bills they handed him."He had them fan the bills out on the counter to make sure" there were no dye packs hidden in them, Harrison added. He then ordered the tellers to go to the bank vault and only bring him $100 and $50 bills. He put the money into his duffle bag and ran out of the bank. But before he left, he warned them not to do anything for one minute."He said if anybody did anything, he would kill everyone in the bank," Harrison said. One of the bank customers was a man whose wife was sitting outside in their vehicle. She saw the robbery and called 911. She gave police a description of what was happening."She got out of the car and was looking in the bank window," Harrison said. "She calls 911 and gives them a play-by-play, going on as she watches through the window."She gave a good description of his clothing and the car he fled in. Another motorist saw the car, too, and gave police a partial number from the license plate."When the community gets involved, in a safe capacity as a good witness, it makes our job so much easier," the sheriff added. This was the second time since the early 1990s that this bank has been robbed. A firm that handles public relations for First Bank said the bank would not comment on any case under investigation by police.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Visit the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at .stltoday.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage
