Sometimes it's just about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right product.That's the case with Detroit rockers Pistol Day Parade. Big-name producers, management, agents, mainstream radio airplay and more are putting the group on track to be the next breakout band from the local scene.But before it blows out of here, the group will celebrate its first full-length release with parties Friday at Diesel Concert Lounge in Chesterfield Township and Saturday at the All Around in Taylor.The band formed in 2009 and soon released its debut EP, "She Wants More," recorded at the Lava Room in Cleveland by Mike Brown (Velvet Revolver, Breaking Benjamin). Local rock station WRIF-FM (101.1) began spinning the band's first single, "Rockstar's Girlfriend," a hook-laden track that's easily compatible with the station's format."That's basically what got everything started," says bassist Jason Lollio. "We recorded the EP in Cleveland and we brought it back home, and next thing you know, Mark Pennington was playing it on WRIF. That song paved the way for where we're at right now."The song also got the attention of noted metro Detroit engineer-producer Tim Patalan, and the group began recording its first full-length at the Loft Studios in Saline with Patalan at the helm. "He really believed in the band," says Lollio. "We literally recorded three different versions of every song to try and figure out the best version of each song. It's catchy guitar rock. That's one thing about working with Tim Patalan: He's known for working with guitar players and pulling out the best in them."From there, the group worked with another noted metro Detroit engineer-producer, Chuck Alkazian, on a remix of the album to cater specifically to radio. The result is a blistering 12-track project titled "Burn," released last week via local label Goomba Records. "It's hooky rock 'n' roll about relationships, which everyone can adapt to," says Lollio.Last month, the band debuted "Not Today," the first single from the new album, which is also being spun on WRIF. Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.迷你倉Sept. 19--RED WING -- After years of debate within Goodhue County, Hidden Valley Campground now faces a lawsuit from the Minnesota Department of Public Health.The lawsuit, filed Aug. 5 in Goodhue County District Court, alleges the 300-acre campground along the Cannon River has been operating without the necessary permits for the past two camping seasons. The Welch property is owned and operated by Cory Axelson.The legal action, filed by Commissioner of Health Dr. Edward Ehlinger, came after Goodhue County and the state obtained a joint search warrant and observed "more than 100 occupied campsites," according to the court complaint.The state of Minnesota requires state and local permits for any camping area "used on a daily, nightly, weekly or longer basis for theaccommodations of five or more tents or recreational camping vehiclesfree of charge or for compensation.""Defendants have not, at any time, held a license to operate thecampground after Dec. 31, 2011," Ehlinger wrote in the court complaint. "Defendants have not, at any time,filed any application documents or paid application fees to operatethe campground after Dec. 31, 2011."Judge Lawrence Clark heard arguments from both parties on Sept. 9 and will issue a ruling within 90 days, resolving an issue that has lingered since the Department of Public Health found nine code violations during an inspection of the campground on May 26, 2011.Calls to Julie Nagorski, Axelson's legal cousel, were not returned. Hidden Valley Camp Ground's phone appears to have been disconnected; calls made to the number listed on its websitewere unsuccessful.Within weeks of the state's 2011 inspection, Goodhue County revoked Axelson's conditional-use permit at Hidden Valley Campground. The campground's correction plan was also rejected by the state on Dec. 22, 2011, meaning its state license was not renewed for 2012.On Aug. 13, 2012, the Minnesota Appellate Court sided with Axelson to reinstate his conditional-use permit within Goodhue County. According to the complaint, Axelson met with state officials a few days later in hopes of getting his 自存倉icense renewed.However, an inspection of of Axelson's 200-site campground shortly thereafter revealed that it had resumed operation without the state license. The Minnesota Department of Health issued an administrative order in April that assessed a $10,000 fine and required that the campground cease operation.Axelson requested a contested case hearing on the administrative order on May 13, asserting that his campground was only allowing "four or less tents or recreational camping vehicles," as allowed under state statute. That case is ongoing.Eleven days after Axelson filed for the contested case hearing, however, the state received a tip that the campground had begun advertising on its website that it was "open or preparing to open." That same day, the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office received a complaint about loud music coming from the campground. Upon arrival, authorities found "20 tents, 20 hard-sided campers with people in them, and many more people hanging around the campsites," according to the complaint.A state inspection on May 25 found "at least 24 occupied RVs at the campground, according to the complaint. Two months later, that number had more than quadrupled.The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has previously noted that the campground's water and sewer systems are not fully functional, though Axelson has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to correct those issues. Various other complaints have been raised, including theft, intoxication and sexual assault, according to a 10-page county report from 2011.The permit issue could have even broader implications for the troubled campground. Source: The Columbian, Vancouver, Wash.迷你倉Sept. 19--Income and homeownership fell in Clark County between 2008 and 2012, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau today.The bureau's American Community Survey paints a grim picture of Clark County's recovery from the Great Recession."We took a nasty hit," said Scott Bailey, regional labor economist for the state Employment Security Department.These economic trends played out among the clothing racks at Spanky's, a store in east Vancouver where people buy and sell used clothing."We've seen more new consignors since the downturn," said Rachel Phillips, Spanky's owner. "We hear, 'I've never done this before, but I need the money to buy clothes for my family.' Some people are using the money just to get by."The median household income in Clark County fell 11.5 percent from $62,956 in 2008 to $55,719 in 2012. Statewide, it fell 6.5 percent from $61,604 in 2008 to $57,573 in 2012."It doesn't feel like a recovery for a lot of folks," said Eric LaBrant of Vancouver.He was laid off from his collections job at Wells Fargo in 2011. After a year relying on unemployment benefits, the single dad landed a contract job that lasted for nine months. Then he was out of a job again."You could send out 100 resumes and not hear anything back," LaBrant said.So he decided to start his own consulting business. Although he sees growth potential, for now, he's making less than he did before."I still get job postings for collections. The starting wage seems to have dropped," he said. "If someone has been laid off making $15 an hour, and they've been out of work for a while and are offered a job at $13 an hour, they're going to go for it. It beats the alternative of not being employed."The housing crash took a heavy toll on Clark County, as well. Homeownership in Clark County dropped from a high of 71迷你倉6 percent in 2007, the year house prices hit their peak, to 64.1 percent in 2012.Many Clark County residents struggled to make ends meet over the past five years.Housing costs stressed renters' budgets. About 55 percent of renters spent more than 30 percent of their income on housing in 2012, up from 44 percent in 2008.Among homeowners with mortgages, that figure dropped from 41 percent in 2008 to 35 percent in 2012.That's not necessarily good news, Bailey said. Some homeowners may have refinanced for a lower payment, but many lost their homes to foreclosure, he said.More Clark County residents relied on food stamps -- 18.2 percent in 2012, up from 8.6 percent in 2008."The economy is impacting families who have never before had to ask for help," said Elizabeth Cerveny, executive director of North County Food Bank in Battle Ground. "With the economy being in such a downturn for so long, many families lost their homes and moved in with parents and grandparents. We see 16 to 18 people living in one household and needing help."With Congress contemplating cuts to the food stamp program, Cerveny anticipates continued demand at the food bank.Bailey said Clark County's economy may be improving, given an uptick in employment. But in watching her customers at Spanky's, Phillips sees more economic uncertainty."You can tell that the area is still recovering," she said. "I've seen people be more cautious. They go into the dressing room with a dozen items and they come out with one or two. They need some new clothes but they can't afford to buy everything they take in. Hundreds volunteered to search for Steger's body in the dead of winter. When she was pulled from the Mississippi River in May, her family's worst fears were realized.Now, testimony in the trial of Jeffery Trevino, Steger's husband, begins Thursday morning. Trevino, 39, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the death of Steger, 30. Steger was last seen the evening of Feb. 21. Her body was found May 8.Twelve jurors and two alternates were chosen by the end of the day Wednesday. Ramsey County District Judge Leonardo Castro and attorneys in the case queried 47 prospective jurors one by one.The jurors selected -- eight men and six women -- include a restaurant worker, an electrician, a mechanical engineer, a Lutheran pastor, a health care consultant with a background in biomedical engineering, a shipping-receiving manager for a produce-supply company, a former software developer, a nanny who recently graduated from college, a retired Marine, a 3M chemical engineer, a retiree from the printing business and a young working mother. One alternate juror works for a cell-tower company. The other is a Roseville grandmother.After the jury is sworn in, the trial will begin with opening statements from prosecution and defense attorneys.Investigators have said they found significant amounts of blood throughout the couple's home in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood. Blood was also found in the trunk of Steger's car, which was abandoned at the Mall of America in Bloomington.Massive search efforts centered on Keller Lake in St. Paul until the focus shifted to the river.Many potential jurors talked of seeing media reports of the case, reinforcing defense concerns that the jury pool would be tainted. Two people who said they witnessed the search efforts at Keller Lake were excused. A woman who said she was "thinking of volunteering" in the search, but decided against it because of the snowy weather, was chosen as an alternate juror.Defense attorney John Conard raised the issue of the blood evidence with a number of the jurors, and some brought it up on their own when asked what details they remembered from media coverage.Conard asked what jurors would think if the allegations about the blood turned out to be "180 degrees different" from what had been presented. "I like little dinosaurs that people leave sometimes."One juror, an immigrant from Africa, demonstrated her limited grasp of English when she continually asked the judge to repeat his questions. She was struck from the panel.Trevino and Steger were having problems in their marriage, according to the criminal complaint in the case. They had gone out for a "date night" Thursday evening, Feb. 21, at the Mall of America, where Steger co-managed a clothing store. Steger was scheduled to work the next day but never arrived.Trevino called police to report his wife missing Sunday, Feb. 24. She had left their rental home in the 500 block of East Iowa Avenue on Friday morning, Feb. 22, to run errands before work, he said.It was not unusual for her to go stay with friends for a few days at a time, Trevino told police.Prosecutors say Steger was unhappy in the marriage and wanted to end it.
