Manila bus hijack hostage Yik Siu-ling says her successful jaw reconstruction surgery in Taiwan has left her feeling reborn.迷你倉將軍澳 Seated in a wheelchair and at first wearing a mask, Yik met members of the Hong Kong and Taiwan media in Taipei, in her first public appearance since surgery on December 11. ``I feel that I have been reborn and I can now see my future,'' said the 37-year-old, adding that the success of the operation is ``the best Christmas and New Year gift.'' She hopes to be reunited with her five-year-old son as soon as possible, and to return to help a pastor take care of orphans. Yik said the operation cost about HK$400,000. As she still requires more minor surgeries and teeth implants in the next four to six months, she fears the HK$1 million payout she received from the Philippine government may not be enough. She said since the cost of surgery in Taiwan is high, she may need to undergo remaining operations in Hong Kong. ``But I don't know which doctor can do my remaining surgeries.'' Commenting on the previously unsuccessful operations at home, Yip said nobody wanted those to happen. But she accused the Prince of Wales Hospital of not doing enough to assist her in Taiwan. A hospitalspokesman described the accusation as inaccurate. Yik also said she will never forget the nightmares she suffered after being shot in the 2010 hostage drama and fearing she would have to spend the rest of her life behind a mask, especially after 33 failed operations in Hong Kong. To celebrate her discharge from Taiwan's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Yik took off her mask and ate a piece of cake prepared by staff. ``I haven't eaten food and tasted its texture for years,'' she said. ``I can eat anything now. It feels great.'' The hospital said Yik was able to drink water two days after the operation, and chew on solid food the following day. Her twin sister, Yik Tai-ling, who has been looking after her, became emotional on seeing her happy for the first time in three years. ``I was very upset at seeing her suffer,'' she said. ``Now I feel like my sister has returned.'' Wei Fu-chan, who led the surgical team, said it was most difficult to find usable blood vessels to provide an adequate supply to the neck area, to help reconstruction of the lower jaw. Eight Hong Kong residents were killed and several others seriously wounded on a tourist bus by a rogue cop on August 23, 2010. kelly.ip@singtaonewscorp.com 24小時迷你倉
