Source: Asbury Park Press, N.mini storageJ.Oct. 10--LACEY -- The federal government shutdown canceled one more activity this week, when the biennial emergency drill for the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant was called off.Held every two years, the exercise was to have been held Tuesday night, with state, federal and county emergency workers coordinating simulated public safety missions, and Exelon plant operators practicing their emergency and damage control procedures inside the plant.But the drill was canceled at the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which would have been on hand to participate and monitor the response of other agencies outside of the plant site. FEMA doesn't have enough people working during the shutdown, said Neil Sheehan, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Agency regional office in King of Prussia, Pa.The exercise, which is required of all civilian nuclear power stations every other year, will be rescheduled, probably for March 2014, Sheehan said.The drill 迷你倉ould have tested updated procedures and equipment, including lessons learned from superstorm Sandy and the Fukushima Daiichi tsunami disaster in Japan. One new upgrade has been battery backup systems for the sirens that would warn the public within a 10-mile radius of the plant if there is an emergency. The battery systems were added as a result of the prolonged power outages after Sandy.Oyster Creek had been offline since Sept. 30 when it was shut down so maintenance work could be done on a turbine speed controller. Two start-up attempts were canceled last Thursday and Sunday because of instrument problems and a vacuum leak in the condenser system, respectively.
