"They are not a military force that goes out and takes people's rights away. We are here to serve the people, to protect the people that need the protection."Officials said it is often difficult for new recruits to make the transition from a citizen mindset, to a policing mindset."Typically difficult for new recruits, especially if they are not experienced, is wrapping their head around being a police officer," Garcia said. "They are looked up to by people. Being a regular civilian, you never have that. Once you are in自存倉this position and put on a uniform and a badge, people expect things from you and you have to be able to provide that."The recruits are all from Rio Grande Valley cities, and joined the Harlingen Police Department after hearing about the professionalism at the department, they said."I needed a job and I graduated from the police academy. All my professors from the university suggested this place, and now I know why. Top 3 percent from he state, pretty much made a good decision being here," recruit officer Victor Mendez said.Recruit officer Frigel Bocanegra shared a similar sentiment, but was able to witness it first had while volunteering at the department since 2010."I had the privilege to experience the type of work the officers put into the profession," Bocanegra said. "The training, the way that they handle themselves with the community. As soon as I graduated from the police academy I thought it would be a great opportunity to be a part of the brotherhood that they have."jmendoza@valleystar.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, Texas) Visit Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, Texas) at .valleymorningstar.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉
