Rick Perry in his last re-election campaign in 2010.That was enough for Perry to handily win re-election -- with 55 percent of the vote, he finished more than 12 points better than his Democratic challenger.But despite the ease of his victory, Perry earned the vote of only one in five of the more than 13 million registered Texas voters in 2010, and only 15 percent of the state's total voting age population. In the 2012 election, Texas ranked 48thout of the 50 states and District of Columbia for turnout among eligible voters, according to an analysis published in The Washington Post.Democratic activists believe those nonvoters hold the potential from them to break their shutout of statewide offices, which now goes back 20 years."Texas is not a red state," said Ellis Brachman, a spokesman for Battleground Texas, belying conventional wisdom. She said maintaining that energy will be critical to sustaining Democratic momentum from the hotly contested local primaries in March to the general election in November, which is generally not as important to Hidalgo County voters."If more of us came out to vote, particularly in the general election, I think we could have a huge impact in turning Texas blue," she said of the county, the seventh-most-populous in the state in the 2010 census.But even if turnout did increase in Hidalgo County, it would be impossible to discern the role Battleground Texas played.Whatever the outcomes in 2014 and beyond, Chavez will know she made a difference."I do. Meyer said Wednesday. "Through his work, I knew him to be a wonderful person, very pleasant. I can't imagine anyone not liking him."Boldt, 21, a senior from West Bend, was gunned down in front of other students Tuesday in a basement lab inside Purdue's electrical engineering building.Cody M. Cousins, 23, is accused of shooting Boldt and is due to make his initial hearing Thursday afternoon at Tippecanoe County Jail.Like Boldt, Cousins was an undergraduate teaching assistant.The slaying has shocked the campus community and left people grasping for a reason why such a horrific act occurred.With a light snow blanketing the Purdue campus Wednesday, there was little activity, since classes were canceled. Some students returned to the electrical engineering building to recover their belongings while school officials made plans to reopen the campus Thursday.In an interview in his office, Purdue University Provost Timothy Sands said, "It'll be a matter of days or weeks before we really understand.""No one understands what the motive was," Sands said. "Clearly, it was a situation where one individual was seeking out Andrew specifically. It wasn't a case of a random shooting. It was a targeted incident. 【本報綜合報道】美國製造業數據差，加上企業業績未如理想，連同中國製造業數據欠佳，都利淡投資氣氛，美股早段偏軟，道指曾跌167點。此外，歐洲製造業表現較預期強勁，為美元帶來壓力，加上投資者趁低吸納，黃金等貴金屬受追捧，銀價曾漲逾2%。美股開市後15分鐘（本港昨晚10時45分），道指跌151點，報16222點；納指數跌25點，報4217點；標普500指數跌12點，報1832點。本月PMI三個月最低位美國上周首次申領失業救濟人數錄32.24小時迷你倉6萬，少過市場預期的33萬人，但前一周則由32.6萬人修訂至32.5萬人，即本周人數增加1,000人；較準確反映市場狀況的四周平均錄33.15萬，前一周則修訂至33.525萬。歐元區PMI創32個月新高，令歐元轉強，美元下挫，金價受帶動，現貨金曾升至每盎斯1254.47美元，升1.41%；白銀最多曾升逾2%。美國10年期債息曾跌4點子至2.82厘，貼近一個月低位。英鎊昨曾升至1.6618美元，創兩年半新高。當地12月芝加哥聯儲銀行全國活動指數錄0.16，差過市場預期的0.9，11月數值修訂為0.69。研究機構Markit公佈美國1月PMI初值，錄53.7的三個月最低位，較預期的55為低，低過12月的54.4。樓市方面，當地11月樓價指數按迷你倉旺角升0.1%，少過市場預期的0.4%升幅。12月二手樓銷售按月升1%，至487萬間，市場預期為0.6%升幅及493萬間，11月減少5.9%，錄482萬間。12月領先指數升0.1%，市場預期升0.2%，11月升1%。麥當勞業績僅持平道指成份股之一的麥當勞，去年第四季業績持平，淨利錄14億美元，或每股1.4美元，市場預期錄每股1.39美元；去年同期錄14億美元，或每股1.38美元。全球開業最少13個月的店舖銷售下跌0.1%，分析原預期增長0.5%，美國分店更下跌1.4%；整體收入升2%，至70.9億美元。麥當勞股價開市後升0.02%。另一方面，去年落實獲微軟數購的諾基亞，第四季業績仍未「翻身」，其中手機業務銷售按年跌29%，至26.3億歐元，按季亦下跌4.5%；公司指主要受智能手機及普通手機銷情拖累。收購於今季完成後，諾基亞的手機業務便全數轉至微軟旗下，而諾基亞將保留網絡設備及其他業務。然而網絡設備業務第四季亦表現不濟，銷售35億歐元，按年跌21%，營運利潤4.08億歐元，按年跌39%，反映該公司未來撇除手機業務後亦未必有好轉；該公司亦預期，網絡設備業務毛利率將會縮水。另外，美國監管機構據報正研究巴郡是否屬「大到不能倒」類別，對金融市場構成系統性風險，是否須納入聯儲局監管。mini storage
