Mobile Phone Forensics by 4Discovery's Josh Fazio Puts Child Molester in Prison for Life
CHICAGO, Aug. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile devices are ubiquitous, and the digital evidence they create can be dramatic. Using advanced mobile device forensics techniques, Chicago computer forensics company 4Discovery's Josh Fazio recently recovered photographs from a mobile device that had sent a notorious child molester to prison for life. Digital forensics experts are playing an increasingly important role in investigations.Jerry Lee Hendricks, a 66 year old repeat child sex offender, was suspected by a mother in rural Momence, IL of molesting her daughter, a girl under ten years of age. Ultimately Hendricks was arrested and charged. As investigators closed in, however, Hendricks destroyed his phone's SIM card, realizing that it contained incriminating photos. Although the damaged SIM card was recovered by investigators, it was inoperable.Computer forensics experts at the Illinois State Police were unable to recover the phone's photos, and the girl's testimony was not compelling, given her age. It seemed the only way to convict Hendricks was to somehow recover those photos.Enter Josh Fazio. Fazio, a computer forensics expert with Chicago based 4Discovery, has a reputation for beating the odds in difficult cases. Law enforcement authorities from Kankakee County, as well as the Assistant U.S. States Attorney, reached out to Josh for his expertise.Loaded with the damaged SIM card, the phone would not give up the photos. Previous efforts to install a new SIM card and "reboot" the phone, as well as other advanced mobile device forensics also failed. Fazio, however, was able to manufacture a new SIM card for the phone, and essentially "dupe" the device into recognizing the new SIM as the original card. The result? Fazio recovered incriminating evidence of Hendricks' crimes, including child pornograph新蒲崗迷你倉. Josh's creative forensics work and testimony resulted in a life sentence for Hendricks."I get immense satisfaction in removing a criminal like Hendricks from society," said Mr. Fazio, a former Will County Sheriff's Police High Tech Crimes Unit Detective. "It makes those long hours in the lab well worth it.""We are tremendously proud of what Josh has done in the Hendricks case," said Jeffrey Hartman, a partner at 4Discovery, "and we are thrilled to have him on our team. Josh is a gifted technician, and brings a wealth of skills to 4Discovery. Our clients benefit immensely from his expertise and training. The digital evidence we are finding on smart phones, iPads, and other mobile devices is becoming increasingly critical, and there is a real shortage of talented experts who can recover and decipher this data. Josh is among the very best."The number of smart phones in use in the world has topped 1 billion, according to global research firm Strategy Analytics, and the photos, documents, and emails stored on them have become a digital evidence gold mine for investigators and attorneys. "One recovered deleted text message can make or break your case," according to Hartman.About 4DiscoveryServing nearly all of the 25 largest law firms in Chicago, and many others, 4Discovery is a boutique computer forensics consulting firm founded by former corporate security executives, information security leaders, and law enforcement.

Electronic repair industry gets second wind
Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug. 18--Up the stairway entrance to Jerry's Records in Squirrel Hill, past the curved landing stacked with boxes of free records, to the right of a room packed floor-to-ceiling with LPs awaiting purchase, a resurrection is underway.Whether that is a resurrection of sound, video or a mechanism designed to launch a cuckoo from an antique clock depends on what's come into Galaxie Electronics that week, said owner Vince Bomba. But regardless of the product, a growing movement toward revitalizing and, in some cases, upgrading vintage electronics has breathed new life into an industry that he worried might have been long dead before he opened his doors."It was very, very slow the first year and a half. We were worried about how we were going to eat and pay the rent and the bills," said Mr. Bomba, who added that he and his wife, Sue, had to drop their health insurance coverage for several months during the hardest times."We're still constantly worried about that. We still don't know what's going to come in those doors from day to day. Right now, it's a little slow, but I have enough work to keep us going."Requests for working record players, tape decks and even eight-track tape players from the growing number of audiophiles converging upon Jerry's was Mr. Bomba's first sign that the electronics repair industry might not only survive, but thrive in coming years on the backs of consumers seeking the layered depth that came with analog audio recordings of the past. The long-suffering industry, which saw a 1.5 percent decline in annual growth between 2008 and 2013, is expected to reach a 0.9 percent per year average decrease by 2018, according to an IBIS World's Electronic and Computer Repair Services July report. And while the report says new and expensive electronics such as flat-screen televisions will help keep the repair industry afloat because they're cheaper to fix than replace, Mr. Bomba says the new spotlight on oldies but goodies is what brings in the bulk of his business."I think there is a new interest, and also people are getting tired of those little iPods and iPads. The sound that comes out of those things has just progressively gotten worse and worse," he said."Once you hear that old analog sound again, boy, you're in a different dimension more or less. When you're listening to an album, you can feel like you're sitting in that room with that band, you can hear the guy walking to the back of the room carrying his beer bottle or whatever was going on."The digital music is right in front of you. It's all flat; it doesn't have that dimension."Jack Ceney, owner of Millvale-based Ceney Electronics, said his shop is having a similar revival. He said the store had rolled with the tides of the industry during its 55-year existence and suffered the same slowdowns others had during shifts from CDs to MP3s and VHS recorders to DVD players. In recent years, he said customers from all ends of the age spectrum have been seeking his services to repair new electronics and revive vintage speakers and televisions."The economy of replacing electronics before buying new ones has come back and could be even better as people 迷你倉出租ealize some of the older stuff is better," he said.If you ask Tom Pietropola, who has handled electronics repairs at Laketon TV and Appliance in Penn Hills for the past 35 years, the repair economy never went anywhere. He said the family business has yet to experience slowdowns related to changes in technology, mostly because it's one of a few retailers that both sells and repairs new electronics. Laketon did stop offering repairs on older televisions that use cathode ray tube displays four years ago, due to difficulties in finding replacement parts. But Mr. Pietropola said orders pour in steadily for flat-screen repairs because people who buy from big-box retailers can't return to those stores for the fix. Additionally, once people realize they can pay Laketon TV around $250 to repair an $800 television, the idea of replacement loses a lot of appeal."Look at the companies that have been here and went out of business -- Sun TV, Appliance TV. None of them did service. We put a lot of those companies out of business," he said with a chuckle.Howard Neimatz, owner of Howard's VCR Service in Ross, said replacement isn't an option for his clients, mostly older people who see no reason to discard nearly working videocassette recorders in favor of DVD players. On the other hand, he said repairs can be an uphill battle since manufacturers don't always have replacement parts available. A lot of times, he said, he'll use the remnants of broken VCRs sitting in his shop to replace parts for a unit a client wants repaired. In recent years, he also has made a business of converting footage recorded on VHS tapes to DVDs.With the number of clients and the number of replacement parts growing smaller by the day, Mr. Neimatz said he relies on income from Social Security rather than his business to survive. Regardless, he said he's not looking to shut down an effort that's become mostly a labor of love."Every VCR has a problem and just getting it working, looking up the problem and trying to get a part for it to repair it, I enjoy it," he said. "If I didn't, I wouldn't be doing it for the money. It's not worth it."Surrounded by a workroom full of both floor models and flat screens, Mr. Bomba couldn't deny the difficulties associated with finding parts for older units. However, he said the chase for elusive nuts and bolts combined with the joy of sparking childhood nostalgia for his clients is all part of the thrill of making what was old new once more. And while he gets the occasional request to try to attach an iPod dock to a vintage stereo system, he said most clients come hoping to reclaim moments when the word "Jobs" only equaled employment."People come in here with old fire trucks, old Teddy Ruxpin dolls that play the tapes. They want to relive their youth, they want them to work again," Mr. Bomba said."I actually get a kick out of working on that stuff. Just seeing the smile on their faces when they see it working again is worth its weight in gold."Deborah M. Documentary gives young Arabs chance to 'vent' anger after revolutions
Source: Jordan Times, AmmanAug. 18--AMMAN -- In the documentary short "Vent", young people from across the Middle East voice their opinion on the future of the region while blaming protesters and rulers for plunging the area into political turmoil.Filming theatre classes, rap lessons and hip-hop dance sessions, the documentary's director, Abdulelah Al Jawarneh, followed 15 participants in a workshop held last year as they planned a live performance to tell stories of their countries' revolutions."The participants, in the 15-24 age bracket, were asked during a one-week workshop to share their experiences in conflicts using art as a medium," said Lina Hamdan, founder of the project ARTiculating Peace, which focuses on building bridges and seeking a peaceful and democratic future across the Middle East."This documentary is the result of their fantastic work and living together," Hamdan told The Jordan Times."Vent" was supported by the "Davis projects for peace" and the "International House -- New York" in collaboration with Amman Theatre lab, Columbia Global Centre in the Middle East, Junior Chamber International and All Jordan Youth Commission. The short film, which was screened at Al Balad Theatre in downtown Amman last Wednesday, focuses on the violence, intolerance and lack of communication young people experienced during regime changes, security crises and civil wars characterising the Arab Spring since its first uprisings in 2010."We talked about our idea of democracy, the one in which no one is oppressed and people communicate among themselves," said Omar Sabbagh, a student from Jordan who took part in the project."We want real freedom and real democracy for all people in the Middle East," the 18-year-old told The Jordan Times. All the young people in "Vent", or ("Tanfiseh" in Arabic) witnessed the brutality of the unrest in their countries either directly or indirectly."If they were not themsel文件倉es the protagonists of an assault they would have a friend who underwent a traumatic experience," Hamdan said. One young girl from Egypt explains in the film why she chose to perform the assault suffered by her best friend during the first days of riots in 2011 which led to the toppling of Hosni Mubarak."She took to the streets with her mum and other elderly people," the girl explains in the documentary, "and the police assaulted and beat them up with no apparent reason."Hamdan said the participants chose the title "Vent" for the film as they saw in the project an opportunity to "vent" their anger, which they rarely get the chance to express but nonetheless experience every day.The documentary also touches upon the worsening refugee crisis throughout the Middle East.Jordanians and Lebanese participants highlighted the refugees' suffering, seeing people fleeing Syria's conflict every day as a reminder of previous waves of refugees from Palestine.Since the Syrian civil war started in 2011, over 1.5 million Syrians have taken refuge in neighbouring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon."I see refugees every day, as this has become common in my country," Juille Sawalhi, 18, a student from Lebanon told The Jordan Times."I joined the project because I wanted to tell the world about their sufferings and need of help," she said.Art and communication play a key role in bridging gaps in the eyes of Vent's protagonists, as they consider revolution not only as a moment in which people take to the streets and protest but also as a chance for dialogue."We hope that this production could spread [young people's] voice around the world and inspire... activists and decision makers to... empower them as agents of change and peace promoters," Hamdan said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) Visit the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) at .jordantimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services存倉
