  • Telling both sides of the story

First person Jason Chu Editor’s note: Chu, a Fudan University lecturer, writes a micro-blog under the name Wenyuangedaxueshi, or “Great Scholar”.迷你倉價錢 He has more than 50,000 followers on Sina Weibo. Weibo is certainly a good channel for disseminating information, but the cases of Qinhuohuo and Lierchaisi should sound warning bells for netizens, because they emphasize that we should be responsible for what we say, especially micro-bloggers with many followers, even though the Internet is a virtual space. However, many legal professionals have raised the question: Should the government be directly involved in cases of this sort? If rumors damage people’s reputations, it seems more reasonable for the victims themselves to come forward and request moral and legal help. I think it is a legal topic open to discussion because it’s also related to the definition of freedom of speech. I believe these cases will prove beneficial by helping to clarify the definition of freedom of speech. It’s important to combat rumors, but there must be a strict distinction between rumor and truth. We need truth, but not a “Department of Truth”. Qinhuohuo’s case reminds me to exercise caution when I want to forward some exciting micro-blogs. All micro-bloggers want to become popular online and attract a lot of comments and forwards, but rumors should not be encouraged. I heard a story during a dinner in the summer of 2012. I took it down and posted it on a micro-blog. More than 20,000 people forwarded the post. However, some people said it was a just rumor and reported the case to Sina Weibo. I usually don’t bother to defend myself, even if people question me online and, as a result, it was decided that I had fabricated the rumor and then spread it. My user account was suspended for two weeks. Later, I dined with the subject of the story and he gave me his version of events, which was generally the same as what I迷你倉d posted, although a few details were different. I told myself that I deserved to have my user account suspended because I failed to check the facts. But confirming information is not easy because different people may have different narrative angles at different times and their accounts may be contradictory, and people’s memories are not always reliable. Therefore, I think we should regard micro-blogs as an open platform for debate. People put their different opinions about the same thing on the table and support those opinions with facts and evidence, which is actually helpful in uncovering the truth. Seeking truth from facts is in the spirit of the Communist Party of China, and it’s something we should do in our daily lives. Comparing credit cards is one of my interests. I like using credit cards supplied by a specific bank, so from time to time I write comments, both positive and negative, about those cards. However, many people have asked whether I have taken money from Bank of China, the bank in question, but that’s not the case. It seems natural that if you say something positive about institutions that are often the subject of criticism, especially banks, people will believe you’ve been paid to write the comment or that the company is involved in some way. However, I don’t have all that many followers, so it’s not a big problem for me. There are indeed occasions where publishers make contact and ask me to forward their micro-blogs, which are usually just book promotions. In cases like these, I reject them outright because I haven’t read the books. I can accept the use of micro-blogs as promotional channels. However, I hope they won’t consist purely of ads, but will also include a range of comments, from positive feedback, which explains the merits of an item, to negative reviews that point out the drawbacks. I would be totally OK with that. Jason Chu was talking to Yang Yang.儲存

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.MICROSOFT'S BALLMER TO RETIRE: Microsoft Corp's chief executive for the past 13 years, Steve Ballmer has unexpectedly announced his retirement, ending a controversial 13-year reign in which the world's largest software company lost its position as the dominant force in computing, Reuters has reported. "We are well down the path in the search," said board member John Thomson, who is leading a search committee that also includes Gates.OMANI REGULATOR URGES BUSINESSES TO USE CCTLD TO PREVENT CYBER THREATS: Oman's Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA) has urged firms in the country to opt for domain names with .om in place of .com, as they are less prone to cyber attacks and spam, Muscat Daily has reported. At our stall we will showcase the different threats," said media and consumer services manager at the TRA, Hilal al Siyabi.HP MAY SEAL ACQUISITION DEALS FOR UP TO $1.5BN: Hewlett-Packard Co (HP) has said it views acquisitions as part of the PC maker's future and it could do deals up to $1.5bn, Reuters has reported. The chipmaker's Cherry Trail and Willow Trail processors will arrive in the second half of 2014, with initial sample shipments of Cherry Trail to customers expected to commence at the end of 2013. The company is already set to unveil its 22nm Bay Trail-based processors with the Silvermont architecture at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) from September 10-12 and will later release its Bay Trail-T processors for tablets, supporting both Windows 8.1 and Android 4.2, the sources said.SONY TO LAUNCH PS4 ON NOVEMBER 15: Sony has set November 15 as the launch date for its PlayStation 4 game console in North America, after which the PS4 will be launched on November 29in Europe, Cnet has reported. Firefox 26 is slated to ship on December 10.DELL'S QUARTERLY PROFIT DOWN 72 percent: Dell Inc. has posted a 72 percent drop in quarterly earnings, as PC sales extended their downward spiral, Reuters has reported. Dell is increasingly resorting to price cuts to soothe customers nervous about its future and to spearhead a late foray into the enterprise computing market. "It was predictably bad. It's not a big surprise that margins compressed to the degree that they did, when they're prioritising sales volume over profitability," Morningstar analyst Carr Lanphier said. "You have to offset that uncertainty somehow."JORDANIAN IT FIRMS MAY MOVE OUT IF TAX INCREASE APPROVED: Representatives of IT companies in Jordan have said that if a proposed income tax law is endorsed, they will be forced to move their headquarters out of the kingdom, Jordan Times has reported. "The situation is worrying and intolerable," Fadi Qutaishat, vice president for sales and marketing at Globitel, said at a gathering of ICT firms held last week to discuss the latest issues and challenges facing the sector. Consumers can download the free update through the Windows Store. It will also be available at retailers and on new devices on October 18, said Microsoft.MALWARE MAY BE DISTRIBUTED VIA ANDROID MOBILE AD NETWORKS: US-based security firm Palo Alto Networks has said mobile ad networks can provide a loophole to serve malware to Android devices, Tech Hive has reported. The embedding of code for the advertising network into a mobile application ensures that ads get tracked and the developers get paid, but at the same time a third-party code represents a backdoor into the device, said Wade Williamson, senior security analyst at Palo Alto Networks, in a blog post. "If the mobile ad network turns malicious, then a completely benign application could begin bringing down malicious content to the device," Williamson said. "What you have at that point is a ready-made botnet."IDC TO CUT FORECAST FOR LAPTOPS WITH 'TOUCH' FEATURES: IDC has said that touch-ready laptop shipments are significantly lower than optimistic forecasts by computer makers, PC World has reported. Last May Acer's president, Jim Wong, said that by the end of the year 30 percent to 35 percent of his company's notebooks would sport touchscreens. "We forecast that 17 percent to 18 percent of all notebooks would have touch this year," said Bob O'Donnell, an analyst with IDC, referring to the research firm's own estimates earlier this year. "But that now looks to be too high, to be honest." He said IDC would probably drop its touch estimates to between 10 percent and 15 percent of all laptops.APPLE RESTORES ONLINE DEVELOPER SERVICES AFTER SECURITY BREACH: Apple has announced that all online services at the company's Developer Connection have been restored, the Mac Observer has reported. Apple pulled the services three weeks ago after a security breach, and slowly brought those services back online.IBM PARTNERS WITH GOOGLE, NVIDIA TO BOOST POWER CHIP UNIT: IBM has partnered with Google and a handful of other tech companies to license its Power chip technology, in an effort to attract more users, Reuters has reported. Under the OpenPower Consortium alliance, IBM, Google, Mellanox Technologies, Nvidia Corp and Taiwan-based server supplier Tyan Computer Corp will build server, networking and storage technology based on the chips for cloud data centres. The hardware and software, previously proprietary to IBM, will be available to open development and it will be licensable to others, IBM said.INTEL TO LAUNCH ANDROID TABLETS FOR EDUCATION MARKET: Intel Corp has unveiled a new line up of tablets for the education market with 10" and 7" screens, Atom chips and the Android OS code-named Jellybean, PC World has reported. The tablet provides more than 6.5 hours of battery life, according to a product brief published on the chip maker's website.APPLE, WINDOWS TABLETS LOSING MARKET SHARES TO ANDROID: REPORT: According to a report by market research firm Strategy Analytics, both Apple- and Windows-branded tablets lost market share in the second quarter, each retreating in the face of increased pressure from Android, PC World has reported. The firm pegged Apple's share of the global tablet market in the second quarter at 28.3 percent, a dramatic decline from 47.2 percent the year before, while Windows' share of the branded tablet market slipped in the quarter, falling to 6.4 percent from 7.4 percent. In contrast, Android's share climbed to 67 percent from 2012's 51.4 percent of the entire tablet market, including white-box unit, which comprised 37 percent of all shipments, the report said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 AME Info (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) Visit AME Info (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) at .ameinfo.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存

  • Newspaper, ex-publisher settle lawsuit

Source: The Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.迷你倉Aug. 29--SCRANTON -- A federal lawsuit the owners of The Times Leader filed against former publisher Richard L. Connor has settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money. The suit filed in May 2012 by Wilkes-Barre Publishing LLC alleged Connor failed to repay the company more than $250,000 in loans made to him during his tenure as chief executive officer and editor and publisher of The Times Leader from 2006 to 2011 when he resigned. The newspaper was purchased in March 2012 by Versa Capital Management LLC, which acquired all assets of the newspaper, including the debt owed to the company by Connor.Attorney Mark D. Bradshaw, who represented Wilkes-Barre Publishing, confirmed the suit settled to the benefit of all parties.Connor's attorney, George A. Reihner of Scranton, did not return a message for comment on Wednesday. The suit alleged Connor "engaged in a pattern" of conduct that caused the newspaper to transfer cash for his 文件倉ersonal use and to pay personal credit card charges he incurred. The Times Leader and Connor "reached an understanding" that the funds paid to him were loans that would need to be repaid. Connor signed a written statement acknowledging the amount that was owed according to audits performed in 2008 and 2010, the suit alleged. In his defense, Connor argued the newspaper failed to abide by an agreement that it would offset his debt by money he is owed. Connor said he took voluntary pay cuts and did not receive certain bonuses he had earned "as a result of the newspaper's financial condition."Connor noted in his defense that he was not credited for unused vacation time and was not provided an offset that would reflect the risk Connor assumed when he loaned the newspaper more than $1 million during his employment.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) • RENTAL SCAM: Perris couple fleeced of $2,300 by imposter

Source: The Press-Enterprise, Riverside, Calif.迷你倉新蒲崗Aug. 29--Hours after Rickia Franklin and her boyfriend, Billy Grant, moved furniture into the home they rented in Perris, they got the shock of their life. The woman who drove up in a Mercedes-Benz to open the lockbox to the four-bedroom home on Lake View Drive, showed them the rental property on two occasions and collected the first month's $1,150 rent and security deposit before handing over their keys was an imposter. Now the couple is homeless. They're out $2,300 in cash. And Monica Lopez, the program manager of Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, says this type of rental scam is playing out with too much frequency in the Inland region."It's become an issue in the last six to eight months,'' she said, and is concentrated most heavily in Moreno Valley, Perris, San Jacinto and Hemet."I feel horrible, and tricked and lied to,'' Grant said. "It's been grueling," Franklin said on the day police knocked on the door of the four-bedroom home they'd moved into 48 hours before to tell them they had to move out."Their case is being actively investigated,'' said Sgt. Ryan Hoxmeier, of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. "It does appear that they were a victim of a rental scam."Riverside County Chief Deputy District Attorney Vicki Hightower said rental scams seem to go hand-in-hand with the foreclosure crisis."We have noticed it is on the upswing,'' Hightower said, particularly where foreclosure activity is prevalent. "People who lose homes to foreclosure have to rent,'' she said, and the scammers have an ample supply of products to use as their pawn to commit the crime.Typically, thieves scout a house that has been foreclosed or pluck one from legitimate real estate listings for the con. An ad is placed at prices well below the going rate. Cash is collected, and a trumped-up lease, signed. When the true owner or listing agent appears on the scene, the renter is evicted and loses the cash they put up. The landlord they've met is nowhere to be seen.Franklin and Grant were thrilled about the nearly new home they found to share with Billy's sister, Tyra, and another relative. They believed the woman was a real estate agent because of the way she handled herself, and the lease they all signed."She even ran a credit report,'' Franklin said, collecting $50 to run their personal information. Now fleeced of their cash, the couple is working with police to find the woman who typed the name, Myrna Cadavona on the lease.Their furniture is in storage.Daily belongings are being shuttled from place-to-place in a compact car that is so old the sun has scorched the paint.Tyra, 9, is relieved she can trot off to school -- leaving behind the sliver of space in the back seat of a car that otherwise is crammed with clothes. Pressed to talk about迷你倉出租what that was like, Tyra tried to put on a brave face before uttering, "I feel bad.""We lost all the money we had,'' Franklin said. "To make matters worse, we were accused of squatting: Thank goodness for the police who recognized we were tricked; we were scammed."Jeff Schlansky, manager of CA-Realty of Murrieta, said he feels bad for the couple who moved into the property under false pretenses. But the owner of the home and the tenant who signed an authentic lease are victims, too, Schlansky said.It took awhile to convince police and the couple that CA-Realty held the legitimate lease. After pressing, he said authorities agreed to cite the no-trespassing code The renter had to delay his family's move-in date."We've seen rental scams before,'' Schlansky said. "What's new to us is how this went."Typically, the imposters steal the pictures and try to rent the home at a lower rate -- sight, unseen -- through ads. "This was different,'' he said. "Real people were involved. This is sophisticated, more immediate."The recording on Cadanova's phone says, "The person you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time."Rental scams are also being played out in San Bernardino County. The Inland Fair Housing and Remediation Board said staff took a call from a woman Wednesday who said she was getting kicked out of a home in Loma Linda by code enforcement and police. Like the Perris couple, this woman signed a lease with someone who did not own the property. The crimes seem to come in waves."It's cyclical,'' Lopez said, noting that these schemes were especially profound in 2010 when foreclosures were at a peak. "It was rampant: We'd get at least one complaint a week.""Remediation doesn't work,'' Lopez said: "These are folks bent on breaking the law. They don't care who they hurt in the process. One Spanish woman paid two companies the same day to try to find a place. She spent $500, and wound up with nothing."The Fair Housing Council can help people find affordable housing and Section 8 rentals at no cost. A pamphlet has also been developed to help avoid rental property scams.Rental Scam Avoidance TipsIf the rent and property looks to good to be true, it may be a sham.Meet the landlord personally.Do not conduct business -- give out credit card or social security numbers -- over the phone.Ask for identification of those you meet.If the listing is handled by a property management company, run it through the Better Business Bureau or state licensing department to check for complaints.Talk to neighbors, current tenants -- if possible.Check property records to verify the owner.Steer clear of cash-only transactions.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.)
