Source: The Lima News, OhioJan.迷你倉 15--LIMA -- The Lima Public Library, in conjunction with the Ohio Association of Food Banks, hosted an informational meeting regarding the Affordable Care Act on Tuesday evening. For James Ferda, a navigator for HealthCare.gov, this meeting was a chance to set the record straight on the recent changes to how health insurance is bought and sold in America."People have a lot of questions," Ferda said. "There's a lot of negative propaganda out there, and we're just here to share the truth."Because the Affordable Care Act has met with a great deal of resistance since open enrollment began Oct. 1, navigators are sent out to hold meetings informing the public of the facts about the law and the options it provides. According to Ferda, these sessions have been very well received."What everyone makes it sound like, you'd think people would be booing us, but it's nothing like that," he said. "Most people are really grateful to get health insurance, even if it's not through the Affordable Care Act but through Medicaid."The goal of the law, according to Ferda, is to give all Americans access to information on a wide variety of health insurance plans, providing clear, "apples-to-apples" comparisons of what is available in each plan, while also holding insurance companies to a set of minimum standards that each plan must adhere to."Once you pick your plan, then it's just between you and your insurance company," he said. "The government has no say in it and we step out. All we're doing is making it easier and holding the companies to certain standards. W迷你倉將軍澳at we try to explain is that this sets up essential health benefits, which is essentially a bill of rights for the patient. It makes sure that certain standards are met, like no limit caps and making pre-existing conditions not a factor anymore."While some worry that this will cost money, Ferda argued the opposite during the presentation."There are ways this is going to save money," he said. "We talk about how it cuts down on waste and cost. Because we're approaching these companies as a large group, dispelling the risk, we can actually negotiate fairer prices. The prices have to be real. So right there, there are savings."Part of the need for navigators and counselors comes from the fact that when potential customers begin the process of signing up for plans, they find there are many more plans and options available than they realized. Navigators and counselors aid customers in going over what each company and plan offers, aiding the customer in making an informed decision."When people say that we haven't signed up as many people, it's not because we don't want to or they don't want to, but there are a lot of choices and options they haven't yet considered and need to," Ferda said.Ferda assured those in attendance during the meeting that this law is not heavy-handed government involvement, but rather the means to promote healthy competition among insurance providers."This is actually capitalism and not socialism," he said.Copyright: ___ (c)2014 The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) Visit The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) at .limaohio.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
