Source: American News, Aberdeen, S.迷你倉D.Dec. 22--Technology is helping the Brown County Director of Equalization Office save some time and money.Property owners in the county can now have their assessments sent their way via email.Mary Worlie, director of equalization, said Brown County is the first South Dakota county to offer the voluntary service. Those who sign up for it will not get assessment cards mailed to them, which will save Worlie's office money. One thing property owners need to note while registering to get emailed assessments is that they will have to include any names under which they have land or property listed. That means any names listed on past assessments or tax bills, she said. Using her name as an example, she said she would include Mary Worlie, Marie E. Worlie, Worlie Auction and Worlie Farms. The assessments can be sent to more than one person's email address, if needed, she said.Assessments have to be sent out annually by March 1. In early February, she said, the office will likely send an email blast listing all properties for which assessments will be going out via email, she said. But values likely won't be finalized by then, she said, so they will be sent out later in the month. The email option is just that -- an option, she said. N迷你倉西貢body is required to use it."This is a work in progress," Worlie said, noting that it might take some fine-tuning.She said the equalization office can track addresses and make phone calls to keep residents from abusing the system by requesting another's assessments. To sign up to receive assessments by email, go to the county website at brown.sd.us and click on "Departments" on the left side of the page. Then, click on the "Equalization (County Assessor)" link.A variety of information about property in Brown County is available online through a service called Beacon. The website -- beacon.schneidercorp.com -- lists some information for free like the owner of property at a certain address and its value. More detailed information, though requires a subscription. The Beacon site pays for itself via revenue from subscriptions, which cost $300 a year, Worlie said. There's also a sign-up fee of $25. There are 30 to 40 Beacon subscriptions, she said.Agricultural and commercial sale information from recent years is also available for free on the Beacon site, Worlie said.Follow @ScottReports on Twitter.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the American News (Aberdeen, S.D.)
