Source: Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, IowaDec.迷你倉最平 14--WATERLOO -- After watching Aplington-Parkersburg get too many good looks early, Waterloo Columbus boys' basketball coach Tony Ersland decided a change was needed defensively by the Sailors.Switching from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone proved to be a great move as Columbus (2-2) held the Falcons to 27.7 percent shooting over the final three quarters in a 62-47 North Iowa Cedar League win Friday at Oppold Gymnasium."It was a tight game in the first quarter and then we switched to our zone," Ersland said. "Our length in our zone is an advantage for us when we are working hard and moving on flight of ball. I thought that disrupted them a little bit."It was a back-and-forth shootout in the opening quarter as there were seven lead changes before a late bucket by Jace Holton gave Columbus a 17-16 lead. The game stayed that way during the early portion of the second quarter as there were three more lead changes in the first two minutes. But after a Nick Waller jumper gave A-P (1-3) a 25-22 lead with 3:09 left, Columbus went on a 9-0 run and the Sailors never trailed again."They are below 30 percent on shooting 3s on the year so we wanted them to beat us that way," Ersland said. "These are games that we wouldn't have been in last year, which is a credit to our seniors who have matured quite a bit since last year."After attacking the basket in the opening eight minutes, Falcons head coach Aaron Thomas said his team played right into Columbus' hands by settling for long jumpers over the final three quarters."We didn't attack and 迷你倉ust stood and they took us out of what we wanted to do," Thomas said. "We didn't get any ball reversal or penetration and I think that was biggest thing. When they went to the zone, we were really on our heels and very lax and not hard to guard."Columbus led by 11 twice in the third quarter, saw A-P crawl within five at 47-42 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Waller, then answered with an 11-2 run to pull away.Clint Kannegieter led the Falcons with 16, while Waller chipped in 14.Beau McMahon led Columbus with 20, while Greg Glass had 10 before rolling an ankle in the third quarter and sitting out the rest of the game.In the girls' game, Columbus jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as the Sailors earned a 42-30 victory.Columbus (2-3) never trailed and its smallest lead after the fast start was six."I thought we held our composure well," Columbus head coach Mark Sinnwell said. "We couldn't get a feel for the game early. We like to get out and run and we couldn't get that because the whistle was blowing so much."I think the key to the game in the second half was going to a 2-3 zone which helped us inside, helped us with our foul trouble. And we got a few breakouts out of it and that was the difference in the ballgame."Anna Strien led the Sailors with 12 points, while Emma Shannon chipped in 11. Lindsay McManus dished out seven assists, including four in the fourth quarter.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) Visit Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) at .wcfcourier.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage
