Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.mini storageM.Nov. 09--Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., on Friday blasted last month's shutdown of the federal government as a reckless move that had devastating impacts on the New Mexico economy.Heinrich made the remarks while speaking to members of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, saying Congress must change the way it does business and stop governing from crisis to crisis."Gridlock and obstruction have come with a cost, and it has been a severe cost," Heinrich said. "I think that hardworking New Mexicans in particular have had to bear the pain and the suffering inflicted by these manufactured crises."More than one-third of the economic activity in our state originates from the federal government, so whenever anyone is threatening to drive the federal government off a steep cliff, New Mexico is there trying to survive the crash from the front seat," Heinrich said.Congress is scheduled to debate the debt ceiling again in December, when the extension passed last month as a component of the legislation to reopen the federal government expires.Heinrich said Congress needs to work to rebuild trust and govern by budgets rather than continuing resolutions that have become tools to raise roadblocks."We need to make responsible reductions in spending, and that has to be done through the budget process, through the appropriations process," Heinr迷你倉ch said.Contributing to the gridlock on increasing the federal debt ceiling is a misunderstanding in the general public about what a federal government default means, Heinrich said."As we deal with the debt ceiling in the future, I might ask all of you to help people understand that that issue is not about taking on another mortgage. It's about whether or not you pay the one you already have," Heinrich told chamber members. Also Friday, Heinrich repeated his criticism of the Obama administration's inability to provide a functional website for Affordable Care Act health insurance enrollment, which opened Oct. 1.Heinrich last month signed a letter with Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and eight other senators asking the administration to extend insurance registration deadlines to accommodate anyone who has struggled with the limited functioning website."My message to the administration has been, fix the darn website and do it tomorrow," Heinrich told chamber members."... There's no excuse for the website not working," he said. Heinrich, however, praised other aspects of Obamacare. He said he's received positive feedback about the prices and quality of the insurance plans available in New Mexico.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)
