By Hu Qing ( China Daily) Laoshan district in Qingdao is on track to become a national hub for e-commerce, a well-known economist said on a recent trip to the city.mini storageDuring his visit to Laoshan in July this year, Cheng Siwei, former vice-chairman of China's top legislative body, said e-commerce is a key component for Laoshan to realize its dream of becoming a "smart city"."A capable government, harmonious community, e-commerce and intelligent transportation are the essence of a smart city," he said.Laoshan was listed among the first batch of the national e-commerce demonstration bases in the country last year, marking a major milestone for the district.The district is leading the country in attracting companies engaged in e-commerce to settle down in its newly established Qingdao International Innovation Park.The park, which cost the district 1 billion yuan ($164 million) to build, has been hailed by many e-commerce companies as an ideal place for business.A large batch of companies engaged in e-commerce, such as Alibaba and JD, have set up subsidiaries in the park.To better serve these companies, Laoshan has also boosted the development of logistics companies. The district now has more than 50 logistics companies and two logistics parks.The occupancy rate of the park has reached 80 percent儲存and the park has decided to expand its area by another 460,000 square meters by 2015.By the end of June this year, there are more than 700 e-commerce companies and its supporting companies. The e-commerce trade volume reached 48 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 60 percent.The Qingdao government has set up an ambitious target that its e-commerce trade volume will surpass 1 trillion yuan by the year 2020.Laoshan has unique advantages in terms of attracting Internet companies.It is the only city in northern part of China that connects directly with the global Internet. All the three undersea cables land in Laoshan.By the end of last year, Laoshan has laid cables with a total length of 3,800 kilometers.A 3G wireless network signal and free Wi-Fi hot spots cover all the district. With advanced Internet facilities, Laoshan hopes to achieve data and information sharing within the whole district to build a smart city. Intelligent transportation, urban management, education have greatly eased the life of its residents.The district has made big strides in the construction of "intelligent communities".With a click of mouse, you can have fresh vegetables delivered to your doorstep.
