Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.迷你倉Sept. 28--As high school football wins go, Rochester Century will chalk this one up under the "We'll Take It" column.Century overcame mostly its own mistakes along with winless Albert Lea in a 21-10 homecoming game victory Friday night at Century Stadium.Century lost two fumbles in the first half that Albert Lea turned into an early 10-0 lead, and the Panthers prevailed despite a whopping 13 penalties for 92 yards including two that took touchdowns off the board in the second half.Head coach Jon Vik acknowledged that Century's rather sloppy play took some of the shine off the Panthers' fourth straight regular season win against Albert Lea."We could have an 8-0 season and I could still be very frustrated with the way we played," Vik said. "We made a lot of mental mistakes that cost us a lot of yards and points. Penalty-wise we've been pretty good this year, but this was not good tonight."Albert Lea put an early scare into the Panthers when it struck for touchdown on its second possession, going 53 yards in four plays after recovering a Century fumble near midfield.Century gave the ball right back with a fumble on its next possession, and the Tigers made this one sting with a wind-aided 49-yard field goal by senior kicker Tim Furland to go up 10-0 in the first quarter."They made some early mistakes and we were able to capitalize," said Albert Lea head coach Max Jeffrey. "it was good to put them back on their heels a bit."Once Century stopped giving its possessions away, the Panthers were able to gain control with their bigger and stronger offensive line that made holes for an effective running game. Century finished with 228 yards rushing. The Century line asserted itself on an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive in the second quarter, all on the ground. Donyae Funches broke around the left side and twisted through a couple of tacklers at the end for a 21-yard touchdown run, the first this season for the 150-pound senior.Century's strong defense set the stage for the Panthers' second touchdown. After a short Albert Lea punt, Century needed seven plays to go 40 yards and take a 14-10 lead when quarterback Alex Beise rolled right and connected with receiver Calvin Austvold for an 11-yard touchdown. Austvold caught the ball near the sideline and walked a tightrope five yards for the score.Neither team mustered much offense in the second half, although Century dominated statistically. The Panthers might have dominated on the scoreboard as well, if it weren't for all those penalties. On Century's first possession of the second half the Panthers committed false starts three straight plays. Later in the same possession a holding penalty negated a 39-yard run by Aaron Ajke to the Albert Lea 10-yard line, and finally, a 48-yard touchdown run on a fake punt by Nick O'Brien was negated by a holding call."You can't have mistakes like that when you've successfully executed a fake punt," Vik said.On Albert Lea's ensuing possession, Century cornerback Darryl Martin intercepted a Drew文件倉Cole pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown. But the score was erased on an illegal block by Century on the return, and again the Panthers came up empty on the possession.Century finally put the game away with a short 25-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter following a 2-yard punt into a stiff wind by Albert Lea. After two more Century penalties pushed the ball from the 1 back to the 11, O'Brien blasted through a hole on the left side for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:45 to play.Century rushed the ball effectively for the first time since the season-opening 42-19 win over Mankato East. Ajke had his first 100-yard game with 11 carries for 105, and he had several long runs called back. O'Brien and Funches combined for another 100 yards."That's what we expected from Ajke from week one," Vik said. "We knew he could run the ball; he's got good vision and he runs hard."Jeffrey said Century controlled the game with its bigger and stronger line, led by two-way starters Luke Wilson and Jon Dicke, who weigh 275 and 300 pounds, respectively.Jeffrey noted that Albert Lea was missing seven starters due to injuries, including five offensive linemen."Century owned it up front," he said. "They were bigger and stronger, and the line of scrimmage was where the game was decided."Century 21, Albert Lea 10Albert Lea #10#0#0#0#--#10Century #0#14#0#7#--#21First quarterAL -- Cody Scherff 2 pass from Drew Cole (Tim Furland kick), 4:50.Drive: 4 plays, 53 yards, 1:53 elapsed time.
