Philips Automotive launched its 100th anniversary celebration earlier this month at the 2013 Shanghai Automechanika, the world's second-largest auto-parts exhibition.迷你倉The company has much to applaud, looking back on a century of innovation that made it a supplier of vehicle lighting products for one-third of the cars in the world. Looking forward, the company sees its future in China, where it currently operates two plants."By 2016, 100 million cars are expected to be produced globally every year, and nearly 30 percent of them will come from China," Dominiek Plancke, CEO of BG Automotive at Philips Lighting, said at the exhibition. "The majority of products displayed here today are developed based on local needs."New products at the exhibit offered a vision of how the company plans to meet the challenge of providing safer, more stylish and more environmentally friendly solutions in a rapidly changing world. For example, Philips WeatherVision is designed to help drivers through murky conditions, like China's smog, by generating a high penetration yellow beam to increase visibility to oncoming traffic and, at the same time, reduce glare. Philips said its research shows that increased glare from headlights is the main reason why motorists feel eight times more uncomfortable driving in rain, fog and snow than they do in darkness. Also on display was the Philips WhiteVision, which can provide 40 percent more light on the road and 20 percent more white light than a standard lamp. The lamp comes with a blue top coating that allows stylish upgrades."Chinese consumers are looking for very bright and white light," said Dimitri Jallade, head of marketing and strategy and vice president of BG Automotive at Philips Lighting. "And they are willing to pay extra for different bluish light."Aiming to bring the personalization of car lamps to a new level is Philips ColorVision, which employs a special coating that enables a colored car bulb to illuminate the lamp with a chosen shade, while projecting pure white light forward to ensure the safety of other road users."And in 2015, the first full LED headlight in China will be produced by Philips, in conjunction with a Chinese manufacturer," Jallade said of the most popular energy-saving lighting technology in Asia, particularly among premium carmakers.Philips Automotive holds an undisputable No. 1 position in supplying lighting products to original equipment manufacturers in China, said Plancke.Does the company's advantage stem from the fact that China, lacking its own vehicle lighting standard, has adopted the European standard? Plancke shrugged and said, in the end, all that matters is road safety, not which country develops a standard. Some of the requirements are quite universal. For example, a headlight should generate amini storagebeam that doesn't cause glare for other motorists, he said."Philips is working very closely with Chinese authorities on the standardization issue," he added.After-sales marketThe original equipment manufacturing market is not the single focus of Philips Automotive. Since the beginning of this year, the company has been rolling out an authorized retail network for the after-sales market, which it believes will be growing exponentially along with car numbers.Jallade said 80 percent of replacement vehicle lights are bought after the original ones fail or break. To address the urgent need for a replacement, consumers will either go straightaway to a physical shop or go online for help.Selling lamps through the Internet, which Philips plans to do as a complement to its traditional retail channels in China, can be very challenging because it's quite hard to demonstrate the brightness of a product online."There are two segments of car light consumers: the ones who really have experience and confidence in replacing the bulbs themselves, and those who want advice and want it done for them," said Plancke. "The first group can indeed go online to buy, while the second group is going to be informed online first and advised to go to a shop later."The real challenge for Philips is educating people in sales channels to ensure that consumers get the right advice on which replacement bulbs to buy for their cars, he added. Most Chinese consumers probably associate the name of Philips with consumer home appliances. That narrow vision doesn't seem to be weighing on the minds of Plancke and Jallade too much."We can leverage our credentials of being a major supplier to automakers," said Jallade. "And our brand will be built not only by the lighting business, but also by other products that are relevant to people in the automotive space."The Philips Automotive Driving Recorder and the GoPure Compact Range Automotive Clean Air System made their China debuts during the Shanghai Automechanika show.Featuring instant collision detection and file-saving protection that can ensure the accuracy of emergency video and prevent re-writing, the recorder can provide testimony for drivers if they are caught up in disputable accidents, which happen a lot in China nowadays. The portable air purifier is a timely response to growing concerns about poor air quality in China. Designed with a unique three-layer filtering process, the purifier is said to be engineered to a medical grade, capable of cleaning up cabin air within 10 minutes. The two solutions, examples of resource-sharing among diverse Philips-branded businesses that include healthcare and consumer products, embody the principle that Philips Automotive is always ready to keep up with changing times and the challenges of the new century.self storage
